Default How many way points

Am planning a 4 day trip this summer, which I can't pre-ride. I planned out 4 day rides, and put in enough waypoints to make it go where I wanted it to go on my computer. I keep reading about members who complain that once it it is imported into their boombox, the route takes on a life of its own.

So how, without preriding, can you be sure you have enough waypoints on a route to make it go exactly where you want it to go?

Make up local routes and practice. You may learn things that will help you on the planned ride that you cannot pre ride.

Didn't one of the updates increase the number of waypoints to 100?

I think I remember that you can have up to 99 waypoints in a route, but my question is how do you know the number that you must have to make it go where you want?

For example, I have a 386 mile ride with a start and end and 14 way points in between. I looked at a friend's ride, and his was only 45 miles long, but he had 28 waypoints, twice as many as me.

Still looking for the answer.

There is no absolute answer to the number of way points you will need.

It all comes down to what roads you are traveling.

Think of it like this: Your GPS will import your starting point, ending point and any way points in between.
From there, the GPS will calculate your route to hit all of those points based on its own internal mapping algorithms (which includes your preference settings on scenic, longest, shortest, etc).

All GPS units work this way, so this isn't anything unique to HD.

As mentioned above, put in a few local rides around your area making several turns (even just hour long rides will work).
This will give you an idea and experience in how to create routes.

If there are multiple roads to take to get you from your starting point to your next way point, then you might need to add another one (to force the GPS to take the road you want).
If there is only one road or way to get there, you will need less waypoints, because all GPS's will take the same road.

Most GPS units have preference settings like shortest, fastest, avoid toll roads, etc.
The HD unit has these also, but adds scenic or twisty that I haven't seen on other units.
These preferences come into play when traveling from one way point to the next, so take that into account.

It just takes some practice and you'll get the hang of it.

Load the map, then check the route on the boom nav. I always print out the directions and then confirm them on the boom. I drop my way points just after where I want to turn. Sometimes, I have to go back to the computer and drop another way point, but once you get the idea of where to drop the way points, its doesn't happen often.

Like the others have said, go ahead and load your trips into the navi. Pull it up and you can walk through the whole thing turn by turning without leaving your driveway. If the calculated route deviates from where you wanted to go you just need to add waypoints in that area to keep it going where you desire. It can be a pain at first, but once you do it a few times it works well. I've also tried the TYRE app and it works very well.

I like that idea of looking at my ride while in my driveway. I put way points whenever the computer (I used MyRoute-App) took me on a road that I didn't want to go on and also put way points when I wanted to turn but the computer went straight for instance. I will go down and see if my system takes me how I set it up. good idea. Thanks

Greg09997 started this thread on a ride planner that is an alternate to HD one. It's a good read and might be easier to enter way points when building your route and skip way points as you ride.
