Is there a reason to update Boom?
I see a lot of threads here about updates, problems because of updates, problems while updating, etc. I have no problems with my system. Reads my mp3's off a cheapo Sandisk 32gig USB stick no problem. Don't pair my iPhone, use a Bluetooth helmet for calls if necessary. Never any issue with the HD system.
That being said, Is there any reason why I should bother with an update? Is map date for example, part of updates?
I'm sort of on the "if it's not broken, don't fix it" side. Now if there's a reason, that's one thing, but just to have the most recent number doesn't do it for me.

Personally, I haven't ever had a problem with the software version that came on my '15 Limited. 'Course I've only used the radio - and that, rarely.
I didn't buy the bike for the Boom! Box and couldn't care less about all those whizz-bang features and functions. As long as the "off" button works, I'm good with it.
From what I understand, the map updates cost over $100 and they're years out of date, and from what I've read on this forum, the updates sometimes fix known issues and usually introduce new ones at the same time.
Crazy!

I am now 2 updates behind the latest, and as of today I am in no hurry to run an update.
Everything I use is working just fine.
These periodic Boom updates are just like your computer updates that Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc. release.
Sometimes they add or change a feature, and sometimes they fix a bug.
But then of course, just as with any computer an update sometimes causes a bug in a feature that was working just fine for you.
If your happy with the way your system is working, there is no "rush" to update just because a new one comes out.
To answer your map update question, NO map updates are not part of the normal updates that HD releases.
They are a completely separate update that is a lot more involved and are not free (CVO owners get 3 free map updates though).
I found it very easy to install the boom update there for fixing current problems and cliches in the system. Mine worked much better after the update its always good to stay current with updates.
Every update, is a stand alone complete software package
You can load any one of them at any time you want.
Do some research, as some of the updates changed the way some of the features work.
So, what might be written down in your owners manual may not be the way it actually operates after a later update.
Ok, good. Thanks. I have no issues so I'll not be updating. If I bring my bike in for service, will the dealer require an update? Or can I "opt out"?

If you don't want the software updated, just let them know if you take your bike in.
Its possible that some dealers might update just as a courtesy while they have it in.
What I need is a GPS update. I was headed to Reno the other day on new 395 freeway coming from Tahoe and there was no road on the screen.
Anyone know how and where I can get an update without giving an arm and a leg?

There's no requirement to update. Some of the updates solved issues, and a couple have caused more issues than they solved. I usually wait for some benevolent souls to update their Boom systems first to see what, if any, problems were caused before I update mine.
