I still have a Zumo 550 (yeah, old used it on my 1999 Road King for many years), but have never used it on my 2015 Limited since it has the built-in BOOM nav.
I'll be the first to admit the BOOM nav is not perfect. But I've grown used to it. I have planned MANY routes on my PC using Tyre and MyRouteApp (I also use the phone app) and imported the GPX files into BOOM. I had never done that with my Zumo before, but I do occasionally import routes into my Zumo for car/truck use.
If by 'planning' you meant 'importing GPX files', I use it all the time with BOOM. My main BOOM gripes are waypoint limits (I've re-created most of Route 66, which is a TON of waypoints) and 'skip waypoint' shows longitude/latitude rather than the waypoint name SOMETIMES !
I'm not familiar with the features of a Zumo 590, so there might be some great, new features that I'm not aware of.
It definitely has some hang ups but works pretty good once you learn/accept it for what it is. I have found you can save the gpx for ride planner etc, then name the waypoints as you wish. Rode 20 years without nav and have learned to like it
