Default Tpms

Well my light came on yesterday. It was hot and I was showing about 44PSI after the bike sit and cooled down about 30 minutes.

Got up this morning and it showed 38PSI cold. Checked the rear tire really good and nothing in it. Light still on.

Kept a close eye on it and nothing changed. We went to Arlington National Cemetery and it was 90 degrees with high humidity.

we rode about 30 miles to Old Glory HD in Laurel M.D.. I asked if I could get some air in my tires. The guy was extremely nice. Put his helmet on, rode my bike around back and returned about 10 minutes later.

He said he let out most of the air to get rid of the HOT air in the tire and filled her up to 41 PSI. The light and warning went out!

I just had the bike in for service last week and have not ridden it. I think the dealer set the pressure wrong. I will definitely keep a close eye on it.

A big thanks to the very nice folks at Old Glory. We hung out there about two hours as a very heavy thunderstorm rolled through.

Do you know what the parameters are for your TPMS, temp wise? My rear tire will gain up to 10 lbs additional air when it is hot out.

HBSoldier is right on... today i was riding and it got into the mid 90’s outside, started the day at 75’ish outside. Tire pressures were 40psi when we left... but in just a little while the front was 42 and rear was 44psi even though it was still 75 degrees outside. Later this afternoon, when the temp was in the mid 90’s the rear tire was up to 48psi (front was 44-45). Front tire temp was around 115 F and the rear tire temp was 140 F or so. This is normal... and your tire pressures are going to increase 1 psi for about every 8 degrees your tire warms up (the simple rule of thumb is 1 pound for each 10 degrees). So if you start out and your tire is cool at say 75 F and 40psi, and your tire warms to 115 F, from riding, your tire pressure is going to increase to about 44-45psi, even if its still 75 degrees outside. When the tires cool, from sitting for a while, they will go right back down to 40psi all by themselves. I would check you warning parameters for your TPMS, as HBSoldier was alluding to, to see what it is setup for... it might just need to be setup if you have never done it.

Very informative thread! What type of TPMS are you guys using? I've been thinking of adding one to my 2016 Ultra Limited.

I use FoBO TPMS, just make sure you use metal valve stems.

The pic is my app with the OAT at 60 degrees. I have it set up at 39/45 cold max. However, at 3:00 today the OAT will be 82 degrees. Without touching anything my tire pressure by then will be in the ballpark of 41/47 cold pressure. I am really **** about tire pressure, obviously. So, the best time to set max cold pressure is when the OAT is at its highest. Then once you're running as the tire heats up the pressure increases. So the two factors that account for tire air pressure change are the OAT, and the heat of the tire itself. Even on my truck that sits outside in the sun. If I go out at 11 am, the right side tires have been in the sun all day. They will be 3 lbs higher then the left, which have been in the shade.

I used a Orange Electronics M203T with in-tire sensors and a display unit.
Here’s a thread with some more info on my setup https://www.hdforums.com/forum/gener...-monitors.html
I got the unit from Gordon at RRR Tool Solutions, he was great to work with. http://www.rrrtoolsolutions.com/index.php

My system is the stock HD that come on the 2017 CVO.

YES when running with higher ambient temps, hot roads and especially with the rear wheel covered more than the front and with the exhaust I have seen 46 degrees on the readout. Never seen more than about 42 on the front.

We did the Rolling Thunder Demonstration Ride today in DC and it was HOT. No issues. It seems that the tires were simply set up with the wrong / lower pressure when I had the 5k service done last week.

Checked it COLD this morning and had 41 PSI rear and 39 PSI front.

Heat expansion and actual PSI are different. Cleary the heat expansion did not resolve the actual issue which was low PSI.

All seems to be fine.
