My 2016 Flhxs has 33000 miles on it and just started making a noise in the primary. When hitting a hard bump it sounds like there is "play" between the engine crank and transmission input. Hard to describe but it seems like the chain is loose and allowing the two shafts to move independent slightly. It only occurs on hard bumps but it sounds like chain slack. I know this description is very poor but was hoping somebody would understand what I am trying to say and have an idea what is causing it.
I would ride it hard it 2nd or third gear let off throttle hard then back on .sounds like the auto chain adjuster needs some help.(I watched a hd tech do this to a loud primary bike and saved a guy money at the dealership.)
It sounds like play in the chain. Not slapping but just not tight
If you use one of the techniques to get the auto adjuster to tighten up, just make sure you don't do it cold.... wait until everything is up to normal operating temperature....
Have you tried going over the same bump at the same speed while COASTING to see if that makes a difference? With no strain of the drive line, I would anticipate little or no drive line related noise. Could it be a loose bracket (as above) or even something in a saddle bag?
