I just finished a major mid life crisis build which includes Howard's front end with his triple tree and 30mm r&t Ohlins
You will be very happy. I am absolutely thrilled with mine. I have a 100,000 mile very well cared for 2000 Road King Classic. I purchased shocks from Howard several years ago and loved them. But I procrastinated on dealing with the inferior stock front end. I did not want to spend the money. So I just accepted the wonky Harley squirrely handling. Ultimately, I decided to do a major mid life crises rebuild, and bump up my existing 107 to a 127, and do Howard's 49mm fork conversion to fit his 30mm r&t Ohlins. I also installed his massive triple tree. All I can say is , "WOW!"
Yes, you can adjust it for a plush ride, but the handling and stability is what's blowing my mind! Between Jason at 1-Forty-1 Speed Cycles injecting a silly amount of torque and horsepower, and Howard's amazing suspension, my driver's license is in serious peril. I can't stop doing 65mph to 90mph roll ons' and leaning into turns at speeds that never would have been possible before, at least with non stained underwear. The bike is just so stable now. And the icing on the cake is it's doing all this with a nice ride quality. I'm definitely a happy customer.
Thank you Howard, and thank you Jason.
I am anxious to get the 30mm cartridges. I am so tired of the awful stock front end. Adognharley what shocks are you running on the rear of your roadking?
I currently have a set of custom built Pro-action piggyback 12" shocks on the rear. It has taken a while to find the sweet spot since I am fairly light at 135# but once I did they ride fantastic. Now I need to get the front squared away. I ordered a set of 30mm cartridges from Howard so I should have a sweet riding streetglide once they are installed.
So I was planning to go with Howards 30mm kit but the timing isnt working out. I just got off the phone with local dealer and he suggest Ohlins FKS 226 cartridges. Now I just need to find a set in stock somewhere
I have the 30mm cartridges and rear shocks(2-2's I think) from Howard. Very please with both. Plush is the word the wife used the first ride she took for the rear. The front is much more stable and no brake dive. You wont regret spending the money. You've rode this long with out cartridges, I'd wait and get them from Howard. He know's what he's doing.
So yesterday in an act of desperation before the sturgis trip I tore the front end down, cleaned and rebuilt it but added 50% type E oil and 50% SE heavy oil. It is far from perfect but it is SOOOO much better then before. I certainly think it is livable for now. I was truly surprised at how dramatic of a difference it has made. I know it doesn't compare to the Ohlins cartridge but it is the best I can come up with for now.
