Default FLHTK 2014 or 2016??

Greetings all, seeking your opinion on which direction I should go. Looking at a 2014 with 6,000 miles on it compared to a 2016 with 24,000 miles. Which would be the smarter option? I am aware of the recall items on both years and am a bit concerned with water pump issues on both. Will I have fewer issues with the '16 since it's the the third year of the 'new' Rushmore model? Would appreciate any and all thoughts. Thanks!

They are basically the same bike, just 2 years different in age.

Other than the narrow primary on the 2016 and different color options, there is no difference between it and the 2014.

I was in the same boat 6 weeks ago. Knew I wanted a Rushmore. Looked at 2014's with 10k miles or less and 2016/17 with 20-30k miles.

Budget was $15k. What I saw (in GA) were stockish newer bikes with 20-30k miles and few lower mile and/or upgraded 2014's. 20-30k miles on a touring bike don't scare me at all.

What I ended up with was 2014 with 9k miles and local Indy shop did all the work. Came with yaffe apes, full chrome controls, painted inner fairing, Rinehart true duals, chrome fork lowers, bag lid speakers, Rockford Fosgate in all 6 speakers, Rockford amp, adj fairing deflectors, klock werks windshield, clear lens covers, extra tour pack lights.

All for $14k. I added air cleaner and power vision.

Since having it, I'm actually glad I got the lower mileage bike, because in 5 weeks already put almost 2k miles on it.

The purchase price would be a consideration..... Some people/dealerships tend to be overly proud of a low mileage (2014) Harley and reflect that in their price...

And then again, if resale is an issue, with two bikes similar in mileage & condition, the newer bike will always be worth a little more money...

Black Book Power Sports values, show a price difference between similar 2014 and 2016 FLHTK bikes at almost $3000.... 2014 Avg retail= $13,775 and 2016 Avg retail= $16,515

IMHO.... with two years between them, the mileage is close enough that I would buy the one with better combination of price, condition, and maintenance..... If those three are very close, then options/colors and overall appeal of the bike would be the tie breaker....

Good luck with your decision...

I think other than year and mileage they are pretty close to being identical.

Go with the '14. As others have said, the only noticable thing is the narrow primary on the '16. Also, the '16 does have a little more wiring & smaller TBW plug if you were the swap out the handle bars. Making the job a little easier.

I wouldn't worry about any recall issues- the 2014 depending on the date of mfg. had several- I recall having to address at least three. That said, my bike has been rock solid other than stripped splines on the shift shaft a couple years ago. Still on the stock water pump- (knock wood). To me it'd come down to price. Or perhaps some nit picky stuff- the bike with 24K have good tires? One color you like beter? Stuff like that. Very minor differences between those two model years, as others have already stated.

I really enjoyed my 16 a lot. Cannot compare it to the 14, but I do think the water pump was ressolved by 16. The connections on the controls wiring are improved, smaller, making for easier bar change.

If I were you I would pick the color, overall condition, etc that makes YOU most happy. If buying from a dealer an extended warranty may be an option also.

Happy shopping.

Water pump on 2016. Keep in mind many of us owned 2016 some still do and never had a problem with the water pumps. The second part of it was if it did fail you could not get one. That claim also was full on holes. When I read that I called local dealer, just to check there was no problem getting one. Either one of them if there is an outstanding recall on it the dealer will do it free of charge. I enjoyed my 2016, Only reason I traded was I wanted the M8. The narrow primary comes into play if you have issue with footing and stance. The narrow is nice for getting a little better footing . Only recall I remember was the clutch master cyl. I had not problems with mine but they did the recall anyway. They way market is now you should have no problems working a good deal on either one. good luck.
