Hammz - your thoughts on the for sale unit. Would it work?

I will also ask Arsenal if they will install it - and if the software upgrade will do the trick.

If he wants $1300 and there is a possibly the new one will again go for 1500, I will get the new one with a warranty

Few things... looking at that add in the classifieds I couldn't see where the guy ever said what year model it came out of. But if its a factory "take out", the factory has only put them in 2019s & 2020s. Also it seemed the part number shown on it in the picture was a factory number from a 2019 shark nose bike.

The only difference, I am aware of, between the head units for a batwing and a shark nose is what mounting bracket they come with. other wise everything else is the same. AND this doesn't matter because you can use the one your GT head unit. If I remember right, my new GTS was missing the bracket out of the box lol

Updating the software on a GTS head unit without the "A" on the end of the part number, to the same software thats on the GTS head unit with the "A", I am being told would require the dealer to do it. I do not know if that is true or not. So the question is not can it be done, but rather who can, or who has too, do it. I've been told its not like when HD comes out with a radios software update and we download it on a flash stick and stick it in the stereo. That this is a different type of updating of its software.
This winter I'll know, because I'll cross that bridge then, and I have already "updated" my software when HD recently put an update out... and all is working well (but I currently still have the SoundZ module under the fairing).

If you're talking about updating a takeoff GTS to work on '18 down models, the radio will HAVE to be connected to a '19 and newer touring bike to have the firmware updated and a pre-calibration reset done. Even if the dealer does the work, they'll have to take the radio to a '19 or '20 model bike, swap it into place, update it, do the pre-calibration reset then remove it to put back in your bike (or hand back to you). And since the dealer might not know what the heck you really need done, you'd be better off finding a buddy who has a '19 or '20 MY touring bike who'll let you remove their outer fairing, connect the radio and USB cable and do the necessary firmware update/pre-cal reset yourself.

Failing that, the last (that I know of) published Changelog for the GTS software was regarding the MY20.19.30.00 software which is what allows the retrofit. The only change to the system for that firmware was giving takeoff radios the ability to be used on '18 and older bikes. I've attached that changelog: it might save you some of the headache I had with my dealer: it explains the requirements and what the firmware does.

I am still amazed a how much you guys know.

So, based on the last past, here is what I understand. If I purchased the retro from Harley, then, the software is already loaded. If I got a new factory radio that does not have one of the two numbers (retrofit), then that has to be loaded into a 2019 and the software has to be updated.

Sounds right because I think I recall if you got a new factory unit and added the Sound hardware, you still (I think) had to put the unit in a 2019.

Given that, what if you found a 2019 radio that was already in a bike - would that have the correct software that would allow you to put that in a 2014-2018. Maybe there is a bike that was a total loss (hope the guy/girl would be OK) and the radio was still good.

I’ll wait until they have them in stock again. It’s not like the current radio is so bad that I cannot use it.

Appreciate Your Information... I have two questions, for clarification.
1) If person had a GTS head unit that came in his 2019 bike, from the factory. If that previous owner, while the head unit was still in his bike had done the latest software update via the HD website and a usb stick (the normal periodic updates, that HD pushes out to the bike owners, to update their own radios with).
Can that GTS head unit then be installed in a pre-2019 bike without issue or anything else needing to be done? (assuming the update was MY20.19.30.00 or later)

2) If a person bought a GTS head unit before they were the "retro-fit" head units (a GTS head unit without "A" as part of the part number). Installed that head unit in a pre-2019 bike using a Soundz module, and the dealer "programmed/authorized" that radio in that bike, using a 2019 ECM in the bike during that process (the Soundz module required a 2019 ECM be in the bike during the initial programming/authorizing of the head unit). Then as time went on, HD came out with an update(s), and that head unit was updated via the usb method.
Can the Soundz module then be taken off and the radio work fine in that bike without the module or anything else needing to be done? (assuming the update was MY20.19.30.00 or later)

And I showing the latest update is actually MY21.20.17.00

Appreciate your insight.

Absolutely worth it to me - quicker start-up and menu response, w-a-a-a-y more intuitive to use and most functions are only 2~3 clicks a away. If you’re a CarPlay fan it’s a dream come true.

And with a QWERTY keyboard! C’mon!
