I have ridden bikes long enough to appreciate such things as chains... easier and more compact to carry with you!
have had both chains and belts. Was skeptical at first until I saw my bud's wide glide with 50k miles, and belt looked like new. Chains are a maintenance headache because they stretch and need lube, just setting the record straight, for me anyway!

A buddy had his belt snap at a gas station in Sturgis. A properly maintained belt will last 100k. I found mine was bad at about 70k, probably due to some stone damage. I caught it in a check before a trip and I am REALLY glad I did the check.
We roamed around the country on our "Pandemic Tour 2020" early on when things were nuts. We stretched it out one trip and went over the 5K, but also got some service on the road on another trip.
I got my oil changed at Fuel Moto in WI after a dyno tune, and a buddy got his done at a dealer in Decatur IL when he had a tire change. That dealer was fantastic. This was in early May last year, and they were not letting anybody in except by appointment. They had probably half a crew, but saw we needed help, and gave us the run of the place. We spent some dough there, I actually bought a taller windshield, and they shipped my other one and a luggage rack home for me.
I am very anti-dealer around home, but happily had my negative point of view changed while out on the road. There are still some good people out there.

Based on my experiences with dealers, I share your opinion......
Funny, I wonder if my home dealers are awesome to people on the road, and just abuse the locals....
never do anything on the road, IMO. too much risk. 6k-7k wont hurt the bike. Come home put the bike in her nice bedroom, then maintain away, sleep well.
