Default Road trip break in

Recently purchased a new streetglide and my wife and I are planning a trip to western Montana. My question is the bikes will only have 200 miles on them before leaving and am concerned about the break in and the lack of oil change at 1000 miles. I have no concrete plans on where we'll be in Montana or how many miles we'll have on the bikes by the time we get home. Is this something I need to be concerned about??

Also what are the must see sights of western Montana/Eastern Idaho??

Not sure how far western Montana is from your current location so it would be hard to say. I wouldnt want to go more than 200 miles (20 percent) above the suggested 1k service for warranty reasons. If that is the case I would firm up some plans and schedule a service somewhere. I feel like the first service is the most important, its not so much about the fluid changes anyone can do that , its about past problem history thats not in the service manual and any excuse not to cover a future warranty claims.

Don't know which way you are headed , but Lolo Pass from Lewiston Idaho will put you near Missoula. There is a Harley Dealer there right off I-90

If you can't put more miles on before your trip and get the 1k service done at home, then just make it part of the trip (if your trip will take you considerably higher than 1k).

When I got my current scoot I changed oil at 500 miles, took a long weekend trip and got the 1k done when I got home.

For the first 1000 miles you should vary your speed, you could find a dealer on the road and change the oil, or do it yourself somewhere, but I wouldn't be overly concerned about it. you could get a hundred answers on this and they all could be right. Just have a safe and fun trip, I wouldn't worry about the bikes that much, Harley aren't fragile. As far as what too see in Montana, I've never been so you can tell me where to go when you get back.
Just had a thought.....at 200 miles most the junk that will be in your oil by 1000 miles is already there, change your oil before you go then when you get back do the 1000 mile service. might be overkill, but would give you some piece of mind.

I'd schedule a service along the way. First service is the most important and there's a reason HD wants it done at 1,000 miles. I wouldn't just jump on the highway and set the cruise at 60 mph either. Vary your speed and RPM's. When I got my SG it was less than 2 weeks before heading to Sturgis. I rode every day to get the mileage for the first service and had it done before I left. Even if you're a little low on the mileage you can still get the service.

From some of things I have heard, I would stay out of that dealer.

Do you hers all that carklen and popen when you get back from a ride . . that is the different meatel expanding and contracting . The sanething goes on on the inside of your motor. That why they tell you to very the rpms and not to exceed a high speed for a long time. you will notice that your bike will start to loosen up as you get more miles on it . try to put at least 500 miles on it before your trip. Then try to do an oil change at the 1000 mile mark a hundred or 2 over should be ok.. Just rember it's a 1000 mile service not just an Oil change . They are checking nuts and bolts ect.

THAT dealer has always treated me fantastic. I went over there in 07 and bought my Wide Glide because the Dealer that was in Spokane at the time just loved to jack up prices.........Maybe that is why they no longer exist.
