If you remove the tank then no you do not on 14 and newer. There is a slot in the cover that allows you to slide it off without have to remove the ignition.
On a Rushmore Shark Nose fairing the ignition can be in the way because the connections are made under the speedo/tach. But on your Batwing you should just have to remove the outer fairing. All the connections are made inside the fairing. For power, the power connector is coming off theback of the power adapter (cigarette lighter) and for the "interconnect" wire coming from the throttle side is just inside the fairing, where the switch pack wires come thru the fairing at on that side. Any internally ran wires (inside the bars) will come out thru the center of the bars, also inside the fairing.
Yea this was the best video I came across for batwing style bikes, like mine. I wasn't sure if the tank had to be moved. I see a special tool (may) be needed to re-install the ignition, so wanted to avoid that if possible, since I have no desire to make an 80 mile round trip in 40* weather to get one, and ordering it would mean waiting weeks for it to be delivered.
No need to remove ignition switch, remove the turn signals and the fairing bolts underneath the lights and tilt the fairing forward enough to reach the center of the handlebars for wire access.
So you're saying no need to remove the plastic cover that goes around the switch either?
That needs to come loose. Two allenheads on either side. Then press down on the front top of that cover and it will release the claws on either side holding onto the inner fairing and you can move that cover back out of the way.
Then straddling the front wheel you can lift the outer fairing (thats been unscrewed from the inner fairing) up and then tilt it out back out of the way.
Ok so the fairing removal went smooth, HOWEVER I have spent well over an hour looking for the power wire. The HD instructions are pretty much useless. Every video I have watched shows it somewhere near the left fork tube, but I have looked and looked. Every connector there is connected to SOMETHING. Here is a pic of the left side. I did find the right side wire, was up near the handlebars..
The red and black wire on the fork tube is the wire from the left side grip
