Its on my 2014 Ultra Classic. Its been doing it off and on for a few months. When cold or warming up, it runs perfectly, but after 20 miles or so, in town, it will sometimes do this. The idle speed SEEMS to be around 1000 but might be a little below. Its rough enough that it sounds like its is almost kicking back against the compensator. I do not hear comp noise on start up or shut down, so it doesn't SEEM to be that.
I have stage one with SE intake, and slip ons, Vance n Hines Power Dual header, with PV tunes. Tunes have been on there over a yr.
I have also been noticing a ringing sound at cruise, that sounds like the gremlin bell, but putting my heel against that doesn't change a thing. This morning when I was stopping in town, at the VA clinic, I noticed rattling like the bike is coming apart. It literally is, found the right side slip on, was trying to slip off. Of course, I had unloaded my tool bag cause I was also making a Costco run.
I mention the loose slip on, wondering if it could be sucking air causing the rough idle, but that seems too far down stream to me, to cause it. When it cools off (87* right now) I am going to tighten everything up,
Any ideas where I should start looking to trouble shoot the intermittent bad idle? Have not looked for codes, and check enging light never domes on. How do I check for codes anyway?
Go to fuelmoto.com. The code instructions and list of codes is on their web site.
Many have posted similar problems resolved by the cleaning the iac. Do a search for more info on cleaning it.
these models have the spark plug wire issue. Look under the front part of the tank where the spark plug wire runs to the front cylinder. It chafes and rubs on the underside of the tank. also where the wires plug into the coil have had some corrosion issues. Tighten up the exhaust header flange nuts.
Yea the exhaust is the clamp, that clamps the muffler to the header. I will be checking the whole system though. I have Dr appointments almost every day this week, so that gets in my way of working out these bugs.
On the plug wires, that exact issue is why I have SE wires on it. The dealer replaced them, while doing some warranty work last year, and said he routed them differently. If it happens again, I will do a coil relocate, but then have to do a horn relocate as well.
Hopefully this afternoon, I will get to do some of this work done. I have an appointment with my retinal specialist about 1pm, but eyes will be dilated so not sure how well I will be able to see.
I do appreciate the comments and things to check, it all helps keep me focused.
You say it doesn't do it when cold, could it be your EITMS kicking in? If EITMS is on it's only going to run on one cylinder at idle anytime the outside air temperature is above 80.
Been scouring the net and am seeing the IAC, as was mentioned by nodyna, and also the engine temp sensor, on the back of the front cyl head. I will finally get to look at it today, and will go over exhaust system, then clean the IAC. If those do not help, I will order, or go get, if in stock, the temp sensor. Oh, yes will look over the plug wires, just in case. IIRC I placed plastic wire loom over the wire that contacts the tank, but will look to be sure is still there.
I have ANOTHER Dr appt tomorrow (gettn old is not for the weak) so will see if the iac cleaning does it.
