Anyone changed out the heavy fenders for fiberglass or carbon?
It would dump a fair bit of un-sprung weight.
Maybe lighter fenders from another model would fit?
What TB said about fiberglass, plus, one could drop more weight by eliminating "Taco Tuesday" and Friday night pizza & beer for a month. The OEM fenders do not weigh that much really.
These OEM steel fenders weigh squat......... Here is my OEM steel front fender with TWO coats of paint on it. (Had the bike painted a few years ago). 5Lbs - 2.5Oz....... How much weight are you really going to lose with an over priced carbon fiber fender?? Now......... if you wanna do it for looks........ different story, I get that, but not for weight. If someone with a carbon fiber front SG fender wants to weigh it and post it, that'd be great, I'd really like to see the difference.
I got in trouble with a girlfriend once. Her son is a real nice kid. He bought himself a Buell and it was pretty fast and comfortable. He's a big boned kid probably about 220 pounds. He started spending a lot of money on various carbon fiber covers, fenders, guards and whatnot. They looked cool and did save some weight.
I told him he could save a lot of money by only eating one double cheese at a sitting. KABOOM the **** hit the fan...
The kid just laughed his mom was all bent out of shape.
It costs a lot of money to trim 15 pounds off a Buell with carbon fiber. I was just trying to help.
First things first... fenders and other body parts aside from a front fender would be SPRUNG weight on these bikes.
But if you're willing to spend some serious coin on weight savings I would start by going to BST carbon wheels. Those will net the most benefit in weight savings as that's also reducing rotational mass. and another big chunk of weight savings by going with an aftermarket aluminum swing arm like from Speed Dealer customs. The go for your carbon fenders, fairing and various fiddly bits. and if you get real serious about it, titanium hardware, and even more crazy a whole new front end. There is well over 100lbs to be saved on these bikes... if you're willing to spend the money.
