I ran a wrapped OEM pipe on my 17 for 2-3 years without any issues to the pipe itself. The wrap however disintegrated over time. Worked great while it lasted - which again was years.

Pic below. I ran the heat shields over them.

Anyway, eventually moved on to an aftermarket header without a Cat which is about the same heat wise.

I don’t think you’ll give up much ground clearance but you will feel less heat.

Lol, first of all, yes I do wear leather boots, not bare foot. How can you not feel heat from an exhaust pipe 2" from your foot? Remember I have the lower fairings that the street and road glides do not have. That does make a difference, but this is still with the vent all the way open.
According to my plugs I am not running lean. I ran the Vance n Hines Power Dual headers for a year or so, and they were slightly better, but not a huge difference. I have since gone back to stock header (decatted) and stock mufflers. The noise was too much for me. Loved the sound, but when climbing hills, the droning sound it makes was killing my ears, ear plugs or not.

Anyway, back to the heat. I may try to come up with some way to deal with this.

My apologies as the lowers must definitely be why you have the heat. I actually tuck up against my pipes when I ride (wind no lowers is why I tuck) and still no heat but again I have major airflow at my pipes where yours is blocked off from the flow.
Rode with lowers on my 91FLH but that was winter time only as I make sure they are off unless very cold, in this Louisiana heat.
That is a cooling slot in the heat shield (V&H Propipe) Usually is unseen as below floorboard. My floorboards are 2" down and 2" forward from stock position. "Tallboys" and best mod to date!

Wondering if there is an option to do this to yours below floorboard if not already open.

see picture below as slot was below floorboard with factory mounts.

Yea can't really call it winter here, but cooler weather is SOMEWHERE around the corner. Was 85* today. But it can get in the 20's and 30's here, so I leave em on. Might have to start taking em off in summer, if nothing else works.

I have wondered about those screen panels that replace the blank in front of my feet. Easier to swap those, and still have my storage. Maybe the screens and the insulation inside the heat shields will make it bearable. Then I could ride barefoot, lol. NOT!

Hmmm, will take a look at those V&H again. I still have them. I have to pull the header off this winter, gonna check my cam chain adjusters. Almost 71K on the clock, so it's time. The lowered and moved floor boards would not work for me. Lol, at 5'6" it would be a real stretch just to get my feet on em.

Well looked at a pic of the V&H header I have and sure enough the cutout is there. No they are not gold plated, color was off in the pic for some reason.
