'14 Street Glide ABS light with linked brakes issue
Has anyone had an issue with the ABS light on a 14 model with linked braking? I have a customer who is having an issue with the ABS light coming on on his '14. The wheel is a Performance Machine wheel. Has anyone else had this issue? This is the first issue i can remember to date.
I advised to clean off teh surface of teh ABS pickup and bearing, ensure that the pickup is making contact with the bearing, try resetting the ECM by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. bByond that I am at a loss. Suggestions would be great.
The bike is not here at our shop but in another state so getting the bike here in to our shop is not possible. Thanks in advance for any help you may provide.
Is there a current or historic code? It will probably be a wss short/open. had an after market wheel that keep doing this, found the ABS bearing was too far in the bore of the wheel. removed the bearing put in a thin(very thin) spacer behind the bearing. problem never cam back.
Purely supposition which hopefully will be confirmed or dis-proven once there is more familiarity with the 14s and linked brakes.
Both of the machines have after market wheels. By fiddling with aspect ratio the circumference of the tire can remain the same as the factory wheel/tire combination or be considerably different. I am wondering if there is a built in self diagnostic watching the difference between front and rear wheel rpm. When difference exceeds a certain number, it trips the light. The rpm difference sensed with the new wheels would suggest a sensor or wiring problem if it happened with factory tires and wheels. Hopefully there would be accessible spots in the computer to update for changes in tire size to eliminate the false light.
I guess it could be the linked braking as that is really the only difference with the 14 models than previous years with ABS. Can anyone else shed any light on this?
I'm thinking that with linked brakes the ABS computer is comparing not just individual wheel slip but also comparing rotation rates of front to rear wheels. If that's the case (and I'm just guessing) if you change the overall diameter of either front or rear wheel/tire the ABS computer is not going to like it. As they are linked electronically it will sense a rotation rate from the modified wheel/tire outside it's programed stock wheel/tire configuration and possibly kick the light on.
