The vent does nothing to help or hurt buffeting. I've tried at many speeds with two shields, and there's absolutely no difference. If you want some kind of basic evidence- Why do you have to close the vent in the rain? Because it blows directly in your face, or because it just kinda sprays and dribbles in behind the wing?

I'm 5'10, so not much taller than you. The stock shield is junk. If you wear a larger helmet (full face or modular) you're going to notice the wind pushing your head around quite a bit. I've gone with the 9" LRS Ultra Recurve, and like everyone else I'm happy with the quality of the shield itself. It could be an inch taller, but at that point I was worried it might throw off the look too much. Either way, the 9" is fine for me, so I'd have to imagine it would be absolutely perfect for you. If I duck a half inch or so it's completely fine!

After reading this thread, I ordered the Ultra 2014 10". I'm 6' and the stock windshield was the perfect height, so I hope the LRS stops the buffeting I've been experiencing. We'll see.

I wear a FF helmet, I have 8,9 and 10" LRS windshields.
Buffeting did not stop till I installed wind deflectors on the forks.

I just installed a Clearview "large" today (about like a 9 inch I believe) w/recurve. Only got a chance to test ride it for about 20 miles at highway speeds, but it made a big difference over the stock. A couple of weeks ago I installed lowers and the combination of that and the Clearview might do it for me. If not, I will try the fork fangs. Taller windshield and fuglies do not make for a better looking bike, but I enjoy function over fashion on my bike. On my test ride with the Clearview I realized that the vent was open, and at about 65 mph I closed it, and noticed some buffeting right away. With the stock windshield there never seemed to be too much difference open or closed.

So, the Ultra 2014 10" I ordered came today. Took it for a test ride and it's a little higher than the stock shield. Now, I'm wishing I had bought the 8", which I'll probably end up getting. Other than that, it seems to ease the buffeting, but I'll need to do some more testing.

Had terrible buffeting on the '15 SGS till I added the 7" freedom shield dark tinted shield and HD fangs. Completely solved the problem. Closing the vent does bring some of the buffeting back. Doesn't matter if full face or half helmet.

I had a 12 SG, I solved it by trading for a 15 RGS.

In my effort to get the SG to work I found that the 8" KW screen was ok but not compared to the RGS with the KW sport flare

I was about order the same windshield and was hoping it was the same height as the stock 10" shield.
So the LRS is a little taller? By how much do you think?

Got a picture?

10 inches is 10 inches. They're going to be real close in height. Maybe TexGuy has a Ultra Low which has a shorter shield from the factory than the Std Ultra!

I ride a '14 Limited with stock shield... I'm just under 6' and am very happy with wind protection... No buffeting to speak of... Lowers help a bunch with wind protection... On my '11 FLTRX most of the wind came from under the fairing and then up...
