Mine always defaulted back to the USB device with my MP3s, but after upgrading the firmware, it goes back to a static radio station. I hate it. I upgraded the firmware hoping I could get it to work with my iPhone, but that didn't work either.

I was also under the impression that it would always just start up where you left off....even the same song. without having to hit the favorite button.
Any tricks I am not catching from the manual? Would love it if either it started where I left off or having to hit the favorite button brought me to the media. Maybe I am not waiting long enought for it to recognize it's plugged in before hitting the hard favorite button.
One time I started the bike and the volume control wouldn't work at all. I shut the bike down, unplugged the MP3 player, plugged it back in, started her up and it worked fine....weird.
I have been playing with this exact scenario. All this is based on the latest firmware update available.
1st, I had the stamp size Apple Nano. I noticed that I was having some connection issues with the short USB to 30 Pin connector to the iPod. It was hit or miss. Sometimes it would start up and pick up where I left off of what I was listening to on the iPod, and sometimes it would go back to the radio.
Side note - I was able to store a Media fav for mine.
Back to iPod - I then switched it out for just a straight USB flash or thumb drive, without fail would start up and pick up where I left off in listening to the media on the thumb drive.
I still was not 100% on the 30 pin shorty to USB connector cord I was using in the cubby, so I bought another one, it worked for a while but then I noticed it started having issues. So I figured it is the cord - I could never get ANY 30 pin to stay "firmly" attached to this Nano. Just seemed "flaky" to me.
So I broke down and bought a refurbished 7th gen Apple iPod Nano with the new thunder bolt lightning connector whatchamajig. $99 16GB and bluetooth. Don't use the BT though, you can't choose playlists.
Tried this one, again bought an Amazon shorty USB to Lighting connector cord, put the Nano into cubby, and she is 100% working as expected and perfect...so far. :-) Turn off, turn on, picks up where I left off without fail.
HTH
That's my exact set up. Newest gen nano 16gb with the black amazon basic short lightning cable. Always starts on the radio even if I shut down on the nano.
Come to think about it. When I was using my newest gen 64gb iTouch with OEM lightning cable it would stop and start on media.
When I get home from this weeks buiz trip I need to hook up the iTouch again and see what it does.
I have the XM radio. If I shut the bike down while playing an XM station, the same XM station fires up when I restart the bike. The problem I have since the upgrade is that it will allow me to set XM stations as presets on the tuner screen but when I refire the bike, those XM presets revert to WB (weatherband).
I am having a similar problem with the XM presets reverting to the WB band but it does not happen every time, maybe once every 10 restarts. It is more annoying than anything and did not happen until I installed the latest software upgrade. You have to wonder how their software engineers can solve certain problems and insert new ones at the same time...
Mine is hit or miss... I have an iPod Nano in the dash but sometimes I bluetooth the XM app from my phone. Most of the time it starts up in FM when if I was listening to the iPod.
Mine usually goes to what was playing when shut off.On occasion it will start with the radio.
My 2012 was the same, You never knew if it would start with radio or CD.
Everyday is a new surprise!lol
I get the WB reset probably 1 out of every ten starts. I also lose iPod 6 out of ten starts and have to unplug and replug the iPod. I also have XM installed and initial startup is always XM and usually fragmented until station synchs or until iPod kicks in if it does. Didn't have these problems stock and regret upgrading radio. If I could figure out how to downgrade i would. Frustrating
USB Worked fine for me till I upgraded to 1.17.4 . then I noticed the "default" issue. if I turn the switch on and start the bike as soon as the fuel pump stops, I noticed the screen would come up on am radio. if I wait to start the bike until I press the accept button it goes to the usb stick. hopefully they can fix this on the next firmware upgrade.
Mine is hit or miss also, but I have noticed that using the presets with the USB Drive about every 10 starts it will wipe all of my presets out for the Media, never did that before this (insert sarcasm) latest and greatest firmware upgrade!

Good observation, you might have something there. Will have to do my own testing but that could be the reason mine seems to be hit or miss but is actually responding differently to two different behaviors on my part.
