Yes, the SE heavy breather routes the hot, oxygen depleted air and oil back into the intake, as do almost all aftermarket air cleaners.
The air is oxygen depleted because a good part of the pressure in the engine is from less than 100% efficiency of ring and valve seal on combustion stroke.
Not only does a true Stage 1 Air cleaner (one that lets only clean air into the engine) increase performance that can be felt in daily riding, it also increases engine longevity. See pics below.
Yeah, that! the 14's are better than the 13's, but still not anywhere near a free flowing system.
This is from an 06 Ultra when it was a mild 95" build and venting the rocker boxes into the throttle body, this piston only has 8,000 miles on it.
This is the same 06 Ultra with a different 95" build which used a 10.1 piston and rocker boxes vented externally, this piston has 27,000 miles on it.
I'm not sure this is a fair comparison. The higher compression build in itself should have a tendency to burn off excess carbon deposits. An interesting comparison would be to look inside the manifold itself for deposits on atmosphere-vented vs. recirculated. I think the recirculated venting is one of the greatest innovations to come to motorcycling. No oil or gas getting on the bike, and no need for a catch filter that has to be cleaned or replaced. In fact, a little oil inside the cylinders may not be a bad thing at all. Diesel engines are oil burners and to some degree are self lubricating.
