It really depends on why you are wanting to upgrade.
For example, the 2014s are still routing everything back into the air cleaner, so if you are wanting to upgrade so that you can have everything route to the atmosphere and have better engine performance in the long run, then you will still need to upgrade.
If you just wanted more air flow and like the stock cover, then there should not be any reason to upgrade if they truly do flow more air than other year models.
Like everything when it comes to a Harley, it is all in your personal preference.

Thanks Natalie. What is routing back to the air cleaner? Unburned exhaust?
Hot blow-by (the air that gets past the rings during the power stroke) and oil mist is what is being fed to your engine by routing the breathers into the intake.

Additionally the exhaust gas has a lower oxygen content, displacing oxygen on each combustion stroke. Another performance robber.
Oil will build up carbon deposits on the pistons, leading to pinging/tuning problems down the road.
Good info, thanks guys... I think a new A/C is in my future.
Just curious, but with the SE heavy breathers (and similar) with the "integral breather" in them; is this just pumping the hot oily air back in through the intake as well? I am assuming so, but wanted confirmation from someone more knowledgeable than me.
Maybe I am missing something, but all of the stage one AC's that I have installed have returned the crankcase venting to the manifold inlet. One of the positive reasons why the crankcase vents to the AC is to avoid the oil drips that accumulate otherwise.
Unburned exhaust gases??? I have not seen anything that connects the exhaust to the AC.
I really doubt you would notice just the AC change by itself other than it might be louder.
When Fuel Moto dyno'd their new 14 limited the biggest jump in power came from ONLY a swap of the mufflers. They dyno'd stock and then switched the mufflers to a 4" jackpot and picked up a lot of torque. 98+ ft. lbs.
Later when they did the AC, 2-1-2 pipes and PV tune they picked up, surprisingly, not a lot more. The AC on my 14 is one of the last things I am going to change.
On my 2014 SGS, I have a SE STG1 kit that uses the stock cover. The OEM filter surface area is small and air flow to the engine is weak even with that so called RAM effect inlet. But if you notice the cover attaches to a sealed box!
With the STG1 kit, the backing plate replaces the box and with the more surface area filter, the back of the cover is open with a diverter piece to send the air from the RAM to the element. It does make a difference if you are running high flow exhaust. I also, tossed the HD paper SE filter to the side and replaced with a K&N, which IMO flows better than the SE paper element.
