Default Air Cleaner Installation

I am picking up a 2015 FLHTKL on Tuesday and have a question about changing the air cleaner. I have no desire to change pipes and am wondering if I need to have the ECU programmed for the installation of just the air cleaner, such as a Ness Big Sucker.

thanks for your input, johnv

No, but you would benefit by adding an FP3. The engine already runs lean, so adding more air isn't going to make the bike run any better than with the stock air cleaner.

NO, no need unless you do both. The engine only needs more air if it can exhaust more air and vice versa.

Your money, but it's kind of a waste of money to do a new air filter if you're not doing anything else. Unless it's purely for aesthetic purposes.

I wouldn't add a high flow filter without tuning, even if it does really have a completely stock exhaust. Unless you can verify with data that the stock air filter and stock exhaust are equally restrictive under all operating conditions, you may cause it to run leaner by changing one or the other without adjusting the AFR. I would add the FP3.

Nothing wrong with a Big Sucker, but a K&N air filter in the stock housing will flow all the
air your Bike can use. K&N part #HD-1614 for about $60.oo

I would also suggest a DK Customs Twin Cam Discrete External Breather System for your Bike.
DK Customs part #DK-TC-BRT for about $30.oo

I just did a SE Heavy Breather and FP3 tune and I notice an improvement with the stock headers (have Rineharts for mufflers).

FP3 would be a good idea

OP, quite certain for your application your install instructions on all high flow breathers will be clear, ALONE your ECM settings will require adjustments.

That said, if you combine the high flow breather with a auto tuner like the FP3 those setting will be flashed to correct the ECM. Hence ,no trip to a dyno for the adjustments. The best way IMHO.

Save your money and do a full stage 1, that's all you'll need. The motors are already running lean per the EPA restrictions. Your bike will love you and you will love your bike. Do a little homework and put together what you want; full exhaust (headers and slip ons), hi flow air cleaner, and fuel management program (TTS, PCV, etc...). You're probably looking at about $1500 for everything, IF you have some mechanical skill, for its fairly easy to do.

That's my 2 cents, ride safe!

I'm confused, if the bike is running totally stock, fuel mixture etc.. having more air AVAILABLE through an aftermarket air cleaner wouldn't require a tune would it? That's like saying our stock breathers can't do ANY MORE at normal riding, it's at it's limit. Etc... and the Rushmore's already have a high flow system, are cammed up a bit, etc... It's not like you're SHOVING more air into the cylinder. Exhaust is one thing,, it scavenges from the cylinder, and if the exhaust is more free flowing than stock, (no cat, tuned head pipe, etc...) then it's going to flow more...and need a tuner. It just seems logical to me the motor won't suck more air than it needs,, no matter what the air cleaner is capable of.
