I have a 2014 ultra classic with the 6.5 boom stereo. I have noticed on two occasions when I start the bike up, the volume control does not respond. I can change the song but I can't hear it. The applies to both the handlebar controls and the rear passenger control. I tried powering down the radio and turning it back on and that doesn't solve it. The only thing that has worked is to pull the bike over and turn the ignition off, wait a few seconds and then restart the bike. I do believe that both times this has happened, I shut the bike off with the kill switch on the right handlebar control. Has anyone had this issue and do you believe there will be a software update for this?
I've had this happen a couple times too. I notice that when it happened to me I didn't wait very long between turning on the ignition and starting the bike and I hadn't accepted the warning yet. When you crank it the radio shuts off and comes back on so it seems like losing power during its startup process can cause some things to not work right. My guess is it has to do with the CANBUS system. I'm not exactly sure if it works the same but in the Blackhawk our electronics work on a BUS system that if you don't start it just right things don't work right. It works like a loop where each component is supposed to come on at certain time and if that loop is interrupted or a component doesn't get on the loop at the right time others my not work right. I know this is a terrible explanation but its hard to explain. This is just my opinion from my experience with a "similar" system.
Twice for me. Once when I didn't let the system boot and hit accept before cranking and the second time was just this weekend on a trip we took. It happened right after a gas stop, and I know for sure I let it boot up which is frustrating. I didn't want to pull off, kill the bike, wait, reboot, and try again so I just went radio-less for that run.
Also had a couple times where the radio booted to fm instead of my flash-drive and when I would try to select "media" it was gray like there was no flash-drive connected.
I don't think it is a start up issue. This has happened to me many times now and twice today. They last time today I was on the road for over an hour and when I turned the radio down to talk to my wife we lost audio control. And yes you have to turn off the ignition switch and power up again. I also just got back from a fly and ride in AZ and the same thing was going on with the rental. I plan on checking for updates for the software tomorrow. If I am current with the latest download I plan on calling the dealer.
I use helmet mounted speakers. That has never happened to me. If it happens again, go to the setup menu, switch the speakers over to headset. Then switch it back. See if that resets the system.
The passenger volume control should only work for the passenger headset volume.
I've experienced no issues since I've gotten into the habit of switching to ACC while I gear up, then once the radio boots (takes longer than just getting to the disclaimer screen & accepting it - after accepting the disclaimer, I hit the NAV button; after the "NAV isn't ready" message goes out & menu comes up, I conclude it's finally ready), turn IGN on & wait for lights to go out, then start the bike.
Its happened to me several times. The volume just refuses to work. The only solution is to turn off the bike at a red light. Turning off the radio does not actually turn it off.

It's a common problem.
FWIW, Don't let the service tech tell you an update to the radio firmware will help, it won't. Unless it's newer than the January, 2014 update.
Rumor was there was supposed to be a new one this month.
I've been trying to work through this problem for over a month, it's intermittent and (so far) I can't find any sequence of turning the radio, the Run switch, the IGN switch etc. On or Off to eliminate the problem.
For awhile with the bike running, it seemed like Radio Off, Run to Off then IGN to off worked but a week later it was back.
had this problem too.i had wards werks fan hooked up to the bike (I know its a wet head) anyway, always looking for more cooling.volume control would not work sometimes then it would go up and down at free will.also the horn would work 3 times then not work any more.anyway as another guy said and the tech said to me in these rushmores the system boots up has a check sequence, when it sences something is overloading the system or something else is on line that was not there before it starts protecting the system, long story short took fan out of bike rebooted problems solved.its ashame I loved that fan which is now for sale. thanks Tommy
