Location of the sensor aside - I do agree that the system sucks. Had the same issue with the HD Combo speedometer/tach on my Dyna. In any daylight conditions the sensor shuts off the back lighting completely, this is especially problematic in shady conditions. The other day I held my hand over the tach for a bit and the lights came on - the NAV system also changed to night colors at the same time........mind you that function can be switched to manual mode. If they insist on using a sensor, there should be a manual override or simply make them adjustable like ever car and truck on the road.
