Air & Oil Temperature Readout Gauge Solution On Infotainment
While doing my 1000 mile fluid change this last weekend and doing my usual visual inspection, I discovered a possible solution to those in this forum that have asked if you can use the current air temperature digital readout gauge in the infotainment system to also read the engine oil temperature.
While parked on the jiffy stand, swing over the handlebar to the right and hold steady. Stand on the left side of the bike, look over carefully on the left steering stem where wiring loom is attached, you will see a pair of white and white & black wire attached to some sort while colored probe...well guess what, that white colored probe is the air temperature gauge. If you disconnect the wire from the probe, and you press the left turn signal to display engine info, the air temperature read will read blank or a couple of dashed like "--"...reconnect the wire back and the current ambient temp will reappear on the infotainment.
Well guess what, I bet you use that same wire sensor or to feed some sort of temperature probe and should be able to display the information on the Infotainment system...you can then wire it to a toggle switch to display air & oil temp...
However, there is could be compatibility issues if used with a diffrerent probe like the HD oil temp proble for the '13 & below models and the CANBUS system...but I guess no one will know until it is tried & tested....ok who is willing to test this theory on their '14 Rushmore bikes...
On the 14's the ECM uses the air temp probe to know when to activate the EITMS. It activates after the motor has been running for 4 minutes and the air temp is 80 or above. It will definitely mess that up and who knows what else the ECM and BCM uses the temp reading for. I wouldn't try it.

Yes, this. The AAT signal goes to the BCM, then the BCM sends the AAT value to the ECM & the Infotainment system. W/O understanding exactly what the ECM uses that signal for, I wouldn't even consider canibalizing my bike's wiring.
I guess I really don't care what my oil temp is at....what would you do with that information?? I'm not going to pull over and let my bike cool down. Now a coolant temp is a different story....
There's no reason that the info screen couldn't be expanded, or another page added, to display more information, such as oil temp, coolant temp, and so forth. It would take a software update, but if the info is available in the ECM it could be read and displayed. How about it, Harley Davidson?

No problem until people get fixated on the temps. I think Harley will someday display the info but it will be later rather than sooner. IMO.
