Default backrest question...

i'm new to touring bikes, so please bear with me. but, after riding a little bit last night, i realized that a backrest is going to be crucial for longer rides. here's my problem though...when i'm doing the long rides, it will be with either my wife or daughter, so i will have the touring kit on along with the harley tall boy 2 up seat. now, i've heard that you would have to have a harley backrest with that seat. but when i'm riding solo, i want a solo seat with a backrest. is there any way to use the same backrest? or would i have to buy a separate backrest for each seat?

The rider and passenger backrests are different. I freaking love my rider backrest. It is well worth a purchase IMO.

I just ordered a Mustang Vintage Solo seat with backrest built into the seat. $515. You can find it here: http://www.mustangseats.com/ProductI...ProductID=1534 Part# 79600

It may be something you want to check out. I've been riding the Mustang Vintage Solo seat for years and it fits me great. I'm 6'3" and weigh 185# for reference. Age and a weak back finally caught up with me so I now need a backrest.

I've got the Tallboy seat and a removable backrest (Harley brand) for the driver on my FLHTK. Of course, on this bike, the back seat has a major backrest of it's own as a part of the tourpak. Sounds like you have the same general setup for the two-up part of your riding, yes?

If I get your question right, it looks like you want to switch to a solo saddle for when you ride alone, but plan to use the Tallboy saddle on longer trips (two-up), yes?

I can't speak to the use of the Harley backrest that inserts in the middle of a stock saddle with any solo saddle, because I think that the mounting hardware for the driver backrest would be on display without the double saddle covering it.

It may, in fact work with a solo saddle, but I don't know how backrests for solo saddles mount to the bike. Maybe they're part of the solo saddle alone, and don't bolt to the bike fender and frame?

Anyway, if you wanted to switch out the backrest every time you decided to run a solo saddle, the work involved to remove the hardware of the backrest in use with the Tallboy seat would be a little tedious. I would just use the Tallboy seat all the time and enjoy the backrest, leaving the mounting hardware hidden away nicely.

Not sure if this helped to answer your question, but good luck!

Shane

that did help, thank you. but yeah, i wanted to be able to switch to a solo seat when i'm riding alone, but want to keep the back rest. problem is that i can't find a decent solo seat from harley, so i didn't know if i was going to have to buy a completely separate backrest for the solo seat, or if i could use the one that i use for the tallboy seat. i'm guessing that's not going to happen though.
