Chipping away are replacing all of the motor bolts. All I have left is the tappet blocks and the transmission side plate. I did most of the right side when I had the exhaust off to install the new pipes. i should have done the lower tranny cover bolts dammit!
Today I took off the tank and did the rocker covers.
Glad I read this, I have the same kit laying around in my winter project stack of parts and didn't think about the tank having to come off. I'll have it off for the headset wire connector harness and some other stuff....and now I know to do the bolts at the same time.
I installed all of the chrome HD bolts on one of my first HD bikes years ago. It took awhile to complete and wasn't cheap when all said and done. A couple of years later, much to my dismay....most of them began to rust....from where the allen or star bit socket inserts. The chrome started to bubble and chip and eventually rust.
I have just left them alone on every bike since. Not enough bang for the buck. Some guys just install the chrome plastic Hot Toppers instead. Mechanics hate them, but they look pretty good and are a whole lot cheaper. JMHO

Yes, that rusting inside is why I went for polished stainless rather than chrome on my bike. Bought from here: http://alloyboltz.com and very impressed with the quality.

Yeah, it's been my experience that when you put a wrench on a chrome nut it cracks the plating, then the rust creeps in and flakes up the chrome. I wonder if the stainless keep their shine over time?
