Default Gas cap rattle hack

After a few months I started to notice the loud rattle that some have reported. Some have gotten them replaced under warranty only to have it return. I put small dents on the edge of where the metal cap meets the plastic. Using a wide flat head screwdriver I started gently pounding until I could see slight dents formed. It took a few passes around. After a few equally spaced ones check the cap by shaking it a bit and notice the closer spacing makes the sound less and less pronounced. After one good ride I have not noticed the rattle again.

See the small dents in the photo.

From another rattle thread I learned to use a thick "O" ring cut in four pieces and stuffed under the lip to get rid of the rattle.
This also stops the usefulness of the clicking when you tighten the cap, if that is useful to you.

After more rides the rattle is gone. Not a bad workaround for 10-15 minutes work.

Yeah I went HAM fist and pounded the crap outta it. I stopped the rattling that's for sure but it looks like the insides were trying to push through the outer shell of the gas cap and it has some deformities now. So my advice is to be gentle with it.

At first glance it looks like a good solution for the rattling cap.But I would be concerned about the plastic in the cap getting scraped from the dimples and falling into my gas tank.

The key is to barely dent it just enough to minimize the gap that’s there. It should still rotate loosely. Start off with a little jab using the palm of your hand on the screwdriver until a small dent is formed. It was very easy.

Not as handy at the tool bench as you are. Here is my solution:

Anyone who served in the military remember boot blouses? I had a few sets laying around so after having enough of that rattle in my face I tried a boot blouse. Hook it up after a fill-up and good to go!
