Tapping from engine under load
Brought a new breakout 114 FXBRS two weeks and two days ago had done 460 miles on her keeping her below 2500 revs May have hit 3000 once or twice, my story starts on my first ride home, was a knocking. Kind of a sowing machine noise while moving (under load) a told Harley several times and all I got back was yeah they do that !!! That’s my new bike I’m thinking, anyway this gos on and I make more calls to Harley with Same response till last sat afternoon I go out for a ride and start her up, poof a big cloud of smoke and a smell of oil, so I rig Harley and they say call Harley support and get bike picked up drop it of to us and we will take a look.Thats going to be tomorrow ! Is it going to be sumpimg or wot ? I’m worried to say the least. Has any one else had a similar experience ?

My new engine was run to 6000 rpm at wide open throttle on a dynamometer before I even picked up the bike, so, I never paid attention to any break-in procedure and just rode like I always do. Runs great now and uses very little oil. I do not need to add betweeen 5000 mile changes.

Seems like you were running the engine at very low rpm. While it's ok to run low rpm, it's not ok to expect it to pull hard when running there. (not that this is in any way an accusation you did anything wrong!!!)
Early on I noticed how sensitive mine was to the octane of the fuel. 93 octane and all is good. Even 91 octane (considered high test at some stations) will give some pinging at lower rpm under power.

You will find that the "pinging" is very common with the M8. I have a 2017 with the issue. A 2018 M8 with the issue until I added a tuner. I also just purchased a 2018 Low Rider Softail with 500 miles on it, totally stock, it has the slight pinging issue also.

Harley got back to me as they had striped the engine, they recon valve stem guide Bad fitting from factory .so fitting new heads and valves + rings just in case !

Wow. Thanks for reporting back to us on this. Genuine engine problems seem to have been pretty rare so far on these Softails. Yours is one of the few I've heard of. Sorry it happened!

Quality control comes to mind ! Harley excuse was tooling not changed frequently enuf (great) As top end engine noise we hear about in these threads, is this the answer !!! NOT GOOD ENUF is it !

They tell me the parts they require (heads valves + rings just incase ! They can sauce in two days but a gasket kit is going to take another 21 days or more from the states. That means they will have had my new bike twice as long as me, again not impress to Say the least.
