Hey everybody, I'm brand new here and I'll update stuff in a bit when I'm not using my phone, but right now I have a possible mechanical issue. I'd be particularly interested in any H-D mechanics out there giving their opinion. I have a 2003 100 year anniversary edition flhsei2 screaming eagle road king. It started out as a 103 cu. In. but was upgraded years ago to a 124 cu. In. motor. It's had a lot of other work done to it too. The guy I got it from took a mazing care of it and only had H-D work on it. I've had it for about a year or so now and it's kind of wasted on me because I ride about the speed limit. I honestly don't hot rod it at all and I don't let anyone else ride it. The engine is fuel injected and has just over 26,600 miles (almost all highway) on it. Today I rode it in to work, about an hour away; when I was pulling in to the lot the engine started making an intermittent clicking or knocking noise. I pulled in and let it idle and it continued so I shut it off, came back later and checked the oil which was just right and started it again now that it was cooled off. It is still making the noise. So, my question is, what do you think is making the noise and is it safe to ride. I know the cheese ball answer of "You should always have a H-D mechanic Chen k out any questionable noises, but I don't have money to burn if it is nothing and I just never noticed the noise before; despite having this incredible bike (I got a great deal due to this guy's health). I also can in no way afford the $10,000+ engine replacement if I trash it so please give me your honest assessment. Thanks in advance all.
A knock in the engine is not normal and it is something to be concerned about. Could be a valve, could be the beginning of a catastrophic failure. No way to know for sure, get it to the dealer ASAP. If you can, have it towed there
BTW One of the upgrades was a Vance and Hines exhaust, and the heat shield is missing one of the spacers so it makes a little ticking noise, but this sounds totally different and I am pretty sure that its coming from the big stroked engine.
No, not really. I didn't spend too much time listening to it because the boss was still here at that time. I can go back to the lot here in a bit and try to pin point it, but the bike is quite loud so I may not be able to narrow it down specifically. If I had to guess I'd go with the lower portion of the jugs. Could you give me the possibilities of the knock and the click please? Thanks.
A valve job will most likely run several hundred. Do you have any independent mechanics in your area? They tend to have lower labor rates than dealers do.
