I'm looking at a 114 now.... When I buy it should I have a stage 1 negotiated in or wait?
I've heard mixed things about stage 1 for the 114
Seems your happy with it for the 107

Ya may want to choose something other then the HD exhaust. The 114 already has the proper air cleaner so the only thing to negotiate is the SE tuner whish is just fine for a Stage 1. If you go beyond Stage 1 you'll likely get more kick with and aftermarket tuner.

When I made my dealer the closer was free heated grips & installation a handle bar swap.

I waited until I had 2k miles on my new 2019 Softail before I had the Stage 1 upgrade performed. Based on my discussions with HD service writer I trust, 1k miles and check up should be a minimum before having the Stage 1 upgrade performed. Very glad I waited. FYI: I agree with other comments on better slip-ons than SE from HD. But, be careful that you use one that doesn't void your warranty. I went with the S&S Grand National and it has proved to be the right choice for me.

Did the service writer off an explanation on why it was best to wait until the 1K service? Make no sense to me????

I discussed the stage 1 with the service manager the day I purchased the Heritage 114. He say there would be no issue to install it before I took delivery. He also stated the V&H would NOT affect the warranty. Since I had to wait a week for the heated grips to arrive and be install I had time to source the V&H and quiet baffles. The dealership installed the exhaust, SE tuner, a canned tune that best fit my exhaust configuration, and heated grips prior to delivery. Because the V&H's do not have a CAT the service manager suggest the bike would run better, especially in the low RMP range, where we ride most of the time, with a bit of back pressure, hence the quiet baffles. Truth is...… it runs GREAT, no throttle lag or surging, perfect fueling through the entire RPM range, neck snapping acceleration, no deceleration poop. I've owned 50+ bike in the 65 years I've been ridding, the 114 runs as good as any of them. I'm very impressed with the M8 and the ability of the SE Tuner.

Sure, other tuners may do a better job at getting a few more ponies from the motor but I don't need more ponies from the 114. I had been planning to go to a stage 3 TRQ cam and FP3 tuner after the 1K service. Those plans have been shelved indefinitely. The saving will be spent on gas, food, and lodging when I tour.

I got the Grand Nationals, like you, before I even picked up the bike, a 2020 Heritage 114 and I friggin love the sound. However, you don't have to wait to get the stage 1. All they're doing is re-programming the computer. I have about 700 miles on mine and I'm getting the stage 1 on mine tomorrow. I'm swapping out the stock A/C to the HD Heavy Breather, mostly for looks.
