Hi All, I'm waking my baby from winter sleep and I want save money doing by my self the third service (the one at 16k km);
my user manual says I need to change both the engine oil and the primary but it's a little bit vague on the kind of oil I have to use.
I understood that for sure the MOTUL 7100 20W50 is good for engine, and is synthetic but about the primary I have a doubt because in Harley the one branded Sceamin' eagle is used for all (engine , primary and transmission) and is synthetic but MOTUL recommends to use the 3000 4T 20W50 that is mineral, so my questions are (probably stupid I know) the three mechanisms are in some way linked? if not Can I use different kind of oil?
Tks
Lorenzo

Don`t get all wrapped up about oil, the oil companies have scientists who brew this stuff, all we have to do is pick our favorite.

The Engine, Transmission, Primary are all separate, you get to pick your favorite lube for each.

For the engine, any major brand 20w50 (synthetic or conventional, doesn`t matter) oil will give the engine all the protection it needs.

Transmission use gear lube in the 75w90 or 75w140 grade.

Primary can use motor oil (no oil with friction reducers), there are also companies selling oil designed for primary system, although the primary doesn`t need anything special.

Harley also sells oil for the primary and transmission: Formula+ or their synthetic gear lube.

As long as you use the right type and grade lube, you will be fine, the brand doesn`t matter, nor does synthetic or conventional, your choice.

You don`t have to spend a fortune on lube to protect your powertrain.

All the stuff that @Dan89FLSTC said + I prefer the Formula+ over their synthetic one for the tranny, just my personal experience in an FXSB so for my FXFBS I will do the same.

Many sources state you can use synthetic 20w/50 for all three holes. Am I mistaken?

You can also survive on fish heads and rice, but I wouldn't if I had a choice.

Mine too. Been using Red Line products for about 30 years in various vehicles.
