A while back I posted about a noise I was hearing on cold start ups ( a brief knocking sound while starting my bike). Well it quit doing it so I didnt pursue it any further, thought maybe it was just my imagination or something. But the other day it happened again, then after riding for about 45 minutes my oil light came on, so I pulled over real quick and killed it. Checked for leaks, and checked my oil level, everything was fine so I rode the rest of the way home as I was only 1/2 mile away. I called the dealership and they scheduled me for this Friday.
My service manual says, among other things that it could be the sending unit but the noise along with the oil light coming on has me thinking oil pump. What do yall think? Is there anything I need to know before then ? I know some people have upgraded their pumps...also, when I did my 15k mile service I noticed the H-D oil filter was the same as the filters Ive been getting since I bought this bike two plus years ago (2018 fatboy). Of course I didnt think about it till I had the filter on, but didnt they come out with a bigger filter for the M8 ? They service guy I talked to told me it would be ok to drive to the bike to them on Friday,I only live about 7 or 8 miles away but it kinda made me wonder. I do have the ESP so hopefully whatever the problem is they wont try to screw me, I dont know a lot about motorcycles, Im learning as I go, but Ive been working on cars my whole life and employed in industrial maintenance, so Im not a complete moron when it comes to mechanical matters, but I wanna make sure they dont try to pull one over on me. Ive not made any warranty claims, although I could have with the rattling gas caps and the fogged up speedo... thanks for any advice, I will update after they look at it
It sounds to me you have a legitimate concern. To say its an oil pump issue might be premature. Your definitely going at it the right way with a dealer, especially with extended warranty coverage imo.
Yeah, they came out with a different oil filter for the M-8, but my local dealer still doesnt have them so Im still using the old filters since thats all the dealer has.
Yeah I wasnt saying the oil filter size had anything to do with it, Ive been using the same size filter this whole time and never had the light come on. I was just wondering if the new filter is supposed to be the standard now.
Im dropping the bike off this afternoon so they can (hopefully) hear the cold start noise Ive been talking about when they work on it tomorrow, Ill let everyone know what they say
