Default Street Slammer Bars

I bought a set of Street Slammer Bars for my ‘20 Low Rider. I’m mechanically inclined so was going to install them myself. After reading the installation instructions, they say I have to remove the tank and unplug wires and such. Even though this is my first Harley to work on, it seems to me you would just unplug the wires from the controls, snake the wires out of the stock bars, then reverse the procedure. Am I oversimplifying this? What am I missing? Is it a Harley thing?

you can do it just like you said. you will need to remove the front tank bolt so you can rotate it up a little to access the wires. loosen the rear bolt first. i get the front tank hole just above the frame and put the bolt back thru the tank to hold it up.

removing the tank doesn't take long:
-loosen front bolt
-remove rear bolt
-lift up on the rear of the tank, slowly, unplug the fuel pump.
-try and crank the motor, it shouldn't start (you've taken pressure off the fuel system)
-unplug the fuel and the vent lines, remove front bolt, you're done.

you should remove the battery too at some point, but i never have.

you may get a cel too, ride it a few hours, it should clear... probably because i dont disconnect the battery

I've done the Street Slammer bars on my 2019 Low Rider.
You cannot unplug the wires from the controls, all the wiring has to be unplugged from the junction box under the rubber boot on the frame.
UNPLUG THE MAXI FUSE.
Have to loosen the rear tank bolt and remove the front tank bolt, lift the front of the tank and prop it up with something soft like a rolled up towel. The wire going to the tank gauges passes through a grommet on top of the frame and the grommet easily pulls out to get more slack.
Stock handlebars will lift completely but you need to remove the clutch cable and brake assembly, tie up the brake assembly to keep it upright, maybe inside a plastic shopping bag.
Take pictures of the wires and plug locations under the rubber boot before unplugging. Now should be able to remove the old handlebar with all the wires so it can all be transferred to the new bars.
TIPS: Home Depot has wire lube to pull wires through the bars. I used a low E guitar string to fish the wires through the new bars. To make things easier I de-pinned and removed the turn signal plugs like in this post, https://www.hdforums.com/forum/2018-...l#post19873176 .
Take your time, I finished it the next day. Don't force when pulling wires. Be careful re-installing controls and clamps so you don't pinch any wires. The Slammers on your bike are a great bar.

This is a good time to install a cruise control if you need it.

Excellent post! I figured that was the case after I posted and thought about it for a while. Much appreciated info! I have some time off in a couple of weeks so I’ll tackle it then. Thanks a million!

Hell yeah, looks good. I love the hell out of that Defiance collection too, all those pieces look like hot rod perfection.

I'm doing this swap now on my fat boy. The problem I ran into was the left turn signal hits the tank. Is that an extension set I see on your bike?
