A distinctive thing that Harley used to do was to have abbreviations for each model. For example my Dyna Lower Rider is an FXDL and the Road King Special was FLHRXS. However, with the newer models Harley seems to not want to publish these abbreviations. A notable exception is the Low Rider S and Low Rider ST which actually have FXLRS and FXLRST on the tank. This all seems weird to me as the abbreviation was a good way to quickly identify model when getting parts, etc.
Is there an official or unofficial list of the current models' abbreviations?
The real question is why did they abandoned the old initialing scheme, FL = touring chassis FS = softail FX = FX FXR and later Dyna? My Switchback (FLD) and my Sport Glide (FLSB) are both FLs but one is a Dyna and one a Softail.

Never seen an FS. Softail is FLST for the bigger cruisers. And FXST was for the standard wide glide small fender and 21” wheel. Springer with the small fender and 21” wheel. The 70s and up to 84 the FL and FX shared the same frame.
some designations are regurgitation of old ones too. Like the FXSB.

They did because know one could remember what a FLHTCUSE or FLHTCUTG or a FLHTCUTG or even a FXSTSSE is.
I think it's Harley Dealership Parking lot bragging rights. "Dude is that a FLHTK I see you on?". "No newbie it's a FLHTKL. Come on learn your models!"
