I'm newer too, a couple years in now.

I was concerned at 1st too. These folks educated me how it works, it locks downward so the bike can't roll. Just be sure you kick it all the way forward before setting down on it so it sits in that slot.
I don't care for jiffy either, but there's much bigger things to worry about.

BMW, Ducati, Suzuki, Honda, even Bultaco lol, I put the stand down and walk away. '22 FXLRS - I put it down, on a smooth surface, it slides a couple inches and locks into place, one a rough surface it does not slide nor lock, on broom finish concrete, it may or may not slide into place, or slide 10 minutes after you park. Not a fan.

Skiding is a function of the friction, or lack of, between the pavement and stand. Right itbupmifvyou want more traction. Or park it in gear…

I fixed mine to slide into place more easily.

I had the same problem as the OP.It never felt secure when down. I did the same grinding as Old Mike which helped the digging in problem. Still didn't

give me a warm and fuzzy feeling that it was down and locked. I put the Fixstand on and it seemed much more secure. I didn't like the resulting extra lean angle

but it was better than the stock mounting.

O.P. and the guy that is ready to rebuild his entire primary over 5 ft. lbs of torque on a few bolts need to step away from the internet device and go for a ride. Jeez Louis...lol...even better than " anywhoo"?

I will say this, there was only one time when my kickstand didn't work and that's because I forgot to put it down. 😵‍💫

I didn't pay much attention to the new Softail stand until one day it didn't deploy fully forward and I didn't notice until I went to get off the Heritage. I was stood there holding the bike about an inch off the deck, veins bursting in my forehead and my ***** in my throat. After I eventually got the bike vertical again, from that moment on I made a point of giving the stand a quick boot when I put it down, ostensibly to make sure it's fully forward, but mostly out of spite.

The stand is different than previous stands but it isn't that difficult to learn how to use it and make sure it's locked.
