I participated quite a lot back in 2012, when I got my first bike (harley), but none of my posts remain up. Curious -- I had a lot of questions as a newbie back then and I learned a lot from the responses. I didn't think any forum did a cleansing because the posts can sometimes be informative to a newbie. If anyone wants me to introduce myself again let me know. The nic "fanosatchmo" is because I love Louie Armstrong, aka "Satchmo".
Now that I have a Harley again, I'm back to the forum. With a question about bag guards.
I take possession of my Hertitage soon, when some mods are finished. I really, really like the look of the naked Heritage, but I bought saddlebag guards based on an experience and the cost of the broken saddlebags of my old Road Glide. I'm now thinking of riding without the windshield and saddlebags on my Heritage until I go on a at least a week-long trip, which I do from time to time. Does anyone take their bags and guards off regularly enough to know if it would be too much of a pain to do so? Or is it easy enough to not matter so much.
Connected question: if the local dealer can't supply the bolts to plug in the holes created by taking the saddlebags off, where might I buy them? Anyone know the size?

I've taken my bags off, it is kinda a pain in the butt. Yes, only 4 screws, but they are surprisingly long and blue locktited with what seems like half a tube on each. It's an obnoxious enough job to stop me from taking them off when I clean up the bike. Certainly not the quick removal like on the old touring bags with the Dzus fasteners.
It would be similar for for the crash bars. Again, four bolts (as I recall), but again, it will take a bit of time.
As for sized replacement bolts to fill the hole, just take your oem bolts and visit the hardware store. I'd get stainless myself.
When I first got my heritage, I had a lock assembly fall apart, dealer let me bring it in instead of on the bike for warranty coverage. (eventually, they didnt want me taking it off at first). So much loctite was used on them. I have a Hogworkz q/d backrest for the old lady, and needed longer hardware. I replaced the socket cap screws with normal hex bolts, still use loctite but a reasonable amount,so its easier now for me to take the bags on and off. I'm always carrying something so my bags stay on.
I almost got the saddlebag bars, but after taking off the right passenger footpeg during my exhaust swap, no way am I taking those off again. Bolt was on so damn tight felt like it was jb weld instead of blue loctite. Plus, it took me forever to get the right side at the same angle as the left was. I mightve had a case of OCD that day
Before I got my clearview shield, I always had the windshield off, factory had way too much buffeting. With a better shield, no more buffeting and windnoise is almsot gone, its a joy to ride even on the expressway.
Thank you for all your assistance in helping me figure out what I want to do. Although as I said I really, really like the look of the naked Heritage, which in the past was actually a different bike (the breakout?), I think it would be far too much for me to keep taking the bags off and putting them back on, messing with locktite and tork each time. I'd probably strip something along the way.
It's a shame, though. A lost design/marketing opportunity for Harley.
