You might need to take a look at the bearings and races. Certainly on my Sportster it is only the motivation to do it but it is a simple job releasing the forks.

Nobody's tried messing with your steering lock have they. I never use mine after some miscreant had a go and knackered the steering neck.

Not that I’m aware of and no visual indication that it has been tampered with.

Coming back around to this, now that the riding season is getting here. I’ve had it out a couple times in the past couple weeks and I’m pretty confident the neck bearings need replacing. I’ve looked at the service manual and videos, I think I’ll leave this one to a professional. What can I expect to pay at an Indy shop for replacement (I’m in MA for context)?

I had to have mine replaced on my old fat bob, talked into it when I was replacing tires. I dont honestly remember what I paid just for bearings. I think it was 4-6 hrs labor charge, and whatever HD got for the parts kit.

I have found a trusted local shop that I use for anything I can't do now though. Even on cars, ive always found indy shops use half the labor that dealers use.

good luck man

It is at the shop now, dropped it off on Tuesday. It was definitely getting progressively worse and the ride to the shop, though short, was interesting. It's only about 5 miles away, but I hit traffic on a big hill at a light and low speed handling was dicey because I couldn't make slight corrections with the bars. It was basically unrideable. Hoping to hear from the shop today as to the diagnoses, but he didn't think it was the bearings, he thought it was too hard to turn for it to be bearings. Thinking broken hardware, though I am not sure what. Maybe the fork lock broken off in the neck, not even sure if that is possible.

Coincidently as I was dropping it off, it started leaking fuel for the first time. That looks to be the known issue of the fuel pump regulator leaking out the vent tube. I have heard that rotating it 180° will fix that and I have also heard that it requires a fuel pump regulator replacement. We will see what he recommends.

It's not even really nice enough out to ride, but I just want it back in the garage so that I can ride when I want to.

So stopped by the shop today and talked to the tech. It appears it was a couple of issues. The fork lock internals were causing the biggest problem, but even after that was fixed, there is still some notching type feel, so they are going to replace the bearings.

As for the fuel leak, it is definitely coming from the fuel pump vent and I realized that it is probably related to the new flush mount gas cap I installed, because it did not do it before that. There is no venting on the flush mount, so I’ll replace that with a vented cap. Hoping to get the bike back next week. Thank you to all for your suggestions and insight, much appreciated
