For those of you following along at home, here is what the stem and bearings looked like when they pulled it apart. He said it was the worst he had ever seen. How does something like this happen on a 2018 with 10,000 miles on it?

Not now. Prior to me, it lived in NH, and not on the coast, I don’t believe. That was my first thought, but there is zero evidence anywhere else on the bike that leads me to believe that it was caused by salty air.

Maybe it's just your photo, but the "patina" on that tree makes it look like it has far more than 10k miles on it.

I don’t think it’s the just photo, it looks like it was pulled up from the titanic. Like I said, the rest of the bike does not show any evidence of anything being off. Very strange.

Another thought, perhaps the previous owner was enthusiastic with a pressure washer and a strong grease cutting cleaner?

This seems like a very likely explanation.

I would say that bike was in a flood under water maybe salt. Its easy to clean outside of the bike. I would check the wheel bearings also and if not already a full flush, breaks fluid, oils,
