Flat 10" subwoofers...Not all the same!
- True 10" Subwoofers
- Oversized 10" Subwoofers
- Compermized 10" Subwoofers
This is all very important if you are building a high performance bagger system.
A true, or nominal 10" subwoofer has a combined cone and surround size of about 9" or 230mm. Add the frame of the speaker and you are at just over 10". This is the audio industry standard for a 10" subwoofer.
Recently there have been some oversized additions to the market, like the JL Audio 10TW3. These subwoofers stretch the boundaries of the 10" format. This type of woofer has a longer excursion as well as a larger diameter. Not realy a 10 but not quite a 12.
Then there are the low performing 10" shallow subs that are nothing short of a complete compromise in design. I can't name any of these subs without getting in a lot of legal trouble, but I will say that most of them are big brand names. Smaller companies generally don't have the resources to produce a specialised shallow sub. As a side note, that's about to change in the near future. So be aware.
The oversized 10" woofers are great if you are looking for the most extreme level of HD show stopping sound. Woofers like the JL offerings, produce the most ground pounding output but will take up most of your bag space and require a large amplifier as well.
Nominal sized 10" subwoofers like the Kenwood Excelon kfc-xw1000f offer a huge jump in performance over systems without subwoofers. Even at highway speeds, yet leave a lot of bag space and only require a fraction of the amplifier power, and consequently demand on the charging system.
As for the low performance crap woofers out there; like I said I can't name names, but here are two proven great performers that we have used in many systems (kenwoods in countless systems).
Had a couple of questions.
1. Will yall be making a kit for the 2014 up bags?
2. I have a KS500 mini I was planning on using for my 13, but wanted to see if that would be too much of a draw on the charging system? (also running a BT4180)
3. Would the Alpine SWR-T10 fit in your current setup?
Thanks!
Yes we will be offering 2014 and up subwoofer mounts any day now. The mounts are all ready to go. We are just waiting on some last minute distribution decisions to be made for the new year.
We have not yet tried the Alpine SWR-T10 yet for ourselves, but dimensionally it should fit.
The KS500 should be fine. With any audio setup you always need to keep in mind how it will be used and what the limitations of the electrical system are. Fortunately the current draw of an amplifier fluctuates with the demands of the music. This gives your charging system time to recover between demanding sections of music, allowing people to run amplifiers that have a much larger max draw than the output of their stator.
