Was just looking at the 7.1 Pro's on BT's website and a thought popped up. Is it possible to run them active with say a Pioneer DEH-80prs or similar head unit?
You can.....but it wont do much. That radio only has 14watts RMS out put, BT sells the speakers and amp package that pushes 180w!!!
You need an amp or those speakers will not be worth the upgrade.
Exactly . . Why would you want to do that? I have those speakers and they are the best 6.5 speakers I've ever heard bar none. But they need some power to hear them.
Running active off the HU ain't gonna cut it!!
are the pros worth the price over the Bt7.1 non pro?
Very tough question bagger . . . Now that I have both and have heard both. Honestly I can't tell that much of a difference, The pros might have just a little more clarity. But not much. those 7.1's are beastly! I love em both! and I know that's not what you wanted to hear. But it's the truth. You'll be a happy man with either one. I'm going to try some different amps on both speakers when I get a chance and see if it makes a difference.
In our testing and what we usually hear from people that have tried both the Pro's are are a little clearer and will definitely give you a higher peak volume. Aprox 15-20% louder. They are the only speakers I have tested that stay clear past what my ears can handle.
But - They would be close to the same on a lower powered amp, the amp would be the weakest link. And it also obviously depends on source, with the pre-2014 stock HD radio I am not sure if you would hear as big of a difference because the radio would start producing distortion before either speaker gave out.
And - Our regular 7.1" are pretty darn good, they are plenty for a lot of people and depending on amp/source/your ears/bike setup/what mood your girlfriend is in it might not be worth the difference in cost.

Thanks Bill! That is pretty much my experience as well. If course I have not installed the BT amp on them (pros) yet. I got a feeling I'm going "Next Level" with the BT4180. I'll keep everyone posted.
