Default Antenna power

Would running a dedicated Power/Ground to the battery be better than the way the H-D hidden antenna plugs on piggyback to the cig lighter? Since I'll have the tank off anyway to wire my new BT 2180. It dosen't pull in distant signals now as it is. Even local stations can fade in/out. I may also need to look into better alternatives when I upgrade the HU.

Hmmm, Ok must be a stupid question.I suppose full time on would not be so good, How about using the Euro Light connector that comes on with the ignition switch on? Or the empty acc switch? So I can use the cig lighter socket for a USB charger.

Power is power at the end of the day. The power from the position light is coming off the same accessories circuit as the cig lighter.

I see no reason why you couldn't stick a USB adapter in the cig outlet with the antenna piggybacking off of those wires as well. Your USB adapter would only pull 3.1 amps at most usually (if you're using both outlets on a 2-plug adapter).

USB out of the cig lighter? I don't use my cig light nor do I plan on it. Could basically run the rear USB from the headunit to the cig light outlet, with slight modification. Any pictures? I'd probably prefer having a usb stick in out view than on the actual headunit it self

And congrats on a great amp choice.

I'm talking about the little cig outlet adapters that have one or two USB ports on them that are just for charging. Smokey may mean a full charger plug that goes out to mini/micro/whatever USB for a phone or something.

I think you're talking extending the USB input from your headunit. The adapters I'm talking about are only wired for charging, not data sync. It may be possible to do what you're talking about by removing the cig outlet from the faring and making some kind of plate to fit in the hole using a USB keystone jack or something similar. But I haven't come across anything that would be a direct plug-n-play solution.

pretty much what I was thinking, but I could also run it out underneath the fairing to where the maing wiring harness and and zip tie to those wires. Could pretty much tuck it underneath them to have it hidden.

Thats what I meant, just to keep the phone charged if I want to use Bluetooth to send music to the new HU. Also I actually use the google maps and earth for finding my way sometimes. I don't need/want an expensive Garmin or whatever GPS.
Thanks all, My amp and speakers should be here Friday

pp6000v2 is absolutely correct. This was kinda bugging me so I called my brother, who is an electrical engineer and you should have no worries using the borrowed power from cig liter. It is capable of powering all of you needs. And yes, for sure you want it to be a switched power source. He also shared that the antenna reception is not amplified, the signal it gets, well is all it has to work with, but some of the audio that was too poor to be amplified previously may now actually be good enough to be recognized as audio. Maybe I suck at describing this, but just be sure you are not sending lots of scrappy, staticy noise to your good amp and speakers. Man, I sure hope this helps. Let us know how it ends up.
