Under $500 I've looked at hogtunes and the fosgate package, but reviews are all over the place. None sound real great. I'm sure they are better than stock..
I bought my ultra used and someone put hogtunes speakers in but no amp. They are at least 5 years old plus. I think they might be going, as the sound gets real distorted when I turn them up.
With 500 bucks you can do some damage on a pretty good upgrade. The biggest question is - do you listen to FM? There lots of good class D amp options that don't cost much, but class d amps tend to cause some or all loss of FM reception. If FM is a must, then you really only have two options and both are a bit pricier. Me personally, I don't even have an antenna. Everything I want to listen to, I can get to on my phone.
If you can risk some reception. Get yourself a Soundstream PN4.1000D (160.00). Biketronics 7P1 speakers for the fairing (240.00). Kicker KSC67 (100.00) for your rear pods. Your bike will be VERY loud with that. You'll need to spend an extra 10 bucks on an amp wiring kit.
Not that the reception is a big deal, but how and why would the amp affect the radio reception? Im new to installs on a bike but have always had upgrades in my cars that have never affected the radio reception.
It's class D amps that affect reception. On a car you can use and class of amp (AB) but not on our bikes because of the charging system. Class D switching circuits is what impacts reception. Folks have had success simply running the power wire opposite your antenna wire on the radio. Others have put ferrite cores on the cables themselves.
I know the amp fits, it's big but fits. You may not have to fab anything...if so, use industrial Velcro to hold it to the top of your radio. its not going anywhere.
Don't forget about the Soundstream PN4.520D, it runs a little over $100 and it's a smaller than the 1000d. The 520d is just peachy behind 4ea HAT/Biketronic 7.1's and absolutely no problems hearing the radio over anything while riding. That said, the 1000d looks good.
Also, not sure how much space you will have with the CB in place?
