OK, so I know this is a year old thread, but are you guy still standing by the Kenwood 998 and Alpine 149 as the top head units? i just picked up the SS 1000D and am now looking at the Kenwood with BT harness and BT7.1 in the fairings and possibly something in the lowers. Just trying to figure out my budget. This was one of the better threads I have read. I'm replacing the stock system on a 2001 ultra. Thanks again for all the advise.
I have a high mid range system at home, so I know good audio quality. But seriously, unless you are listening to your Harley in the isolation of your garage, are you really going to notice the difference at highway speeds with a different HU than the stock HK? Good speakers and a good amp yes! But, I doubt it for the Head unit.

JMHO...YMMV!
Woahhhhh
You will notice a HUGE difference over the stock HK. Light years ahead difference. It's the signal source you are amplifying.
My HK still has a cassette deck for x-sake. Its gotta go. Amazon has a pretty sweet price on the 998. HD radio, Bluetooth, satellite radio...the upgrade list goes on... not to mention the the source. I just want to make the right call. I want to do this once and be done. I don't ride much with the tour pack and lids are not in the budget yet so I'm still looking at the BT 6.5 to in the lowers to marry with the BT7.1 in the fairings. Just didn't think 6.5 would fit in the lowers.
