Default iPod connection - Help!!!

The details - '08 Anniversary Edition Ultra, iPod and Navi module installed by the dealership, iPod system does not have the longer cable...just the standard length so the iPod sits inside the glove box.

The problem - iPod doesn't charge, sometimes it won't sync properly (have to disconnect and reconnect to use), sometimes it doesn't play properly. Most of the issue is that it does not charge.

I can take the iPod inside the house and charge, sync, play, everything works fine with the unit using the original Apple 34-pin (i believe) connector.

My gut reaction tells me that the cable is bad on the bike. Is there a way to check the cable? Fix, repair, or replace? I have a soldering iron, volt meter, and the desire to trouble-shoot / fix the issue.

Any suggestions? I did a search of the forums and couldn't find anything except for install related issues...

Thanks for any and all help!

Mark

What generation of ipod is it? Some generations don't work? I had an ipod nano that wouldn't charge & had to put a new battery in it.

It is a 4th gen iPod Nano. Side note, its orange (cause it matched the bike), like new, and purchased off of Amazon. It charges fine in the house, syncs to the computer, everything about it works great...except for charging while connected to the bike, and the occasional sync issue.

Sorry, but I laughed out loud at your name. Are you using the same sync cord on the bike as you do in the house?

The first thing I would do is try a different device connected to my bike. If I didn't have another device I would borrow someones iPod or iPhone and see how it worked. If it does the same thing you probably have a problem with the interface. If not, I would probably back up my songs on iTunes and the reset my iPod.

No worries about laughing. I laugh it most times also. (5 rugrats if you're curious. Aged 15 to 5...hilarious, I know. Best part? Older two...10 months apart in age. Younger two, 10 months apart in age. Pull-out game weak AF.)

To answer the question...not using the same sync cord as in the house. Using the stock HD cable that came with the iPod interface kit. I was merely referencing that it works fine with the computer and to charge but occasionally doesn't sync and never charges on the bike.

I tried my daughters iPod nano, same gen (4th). Still no charge. I had tried to use my iPhone with the 30-pin to Fire adapter...big waste of $30 from the Apple store.

Does anyone know the pin-out of the Harley cable? Both ends? If not, does anyone know where I can get that info? It would really cut down my time in finding the issue. If I know the pin out of the cable, I can eliminate the cable or the interface unit.

Realistically, when you use a Apple 30 pin connector for the iPod, its only using 4 pins. The other pins on the HD cable are required by Apple, along with the little PC board that is in the connector (the end that plugs into the iPod). It's more Apple BS to corner the market...

Is the interface used and sold by the dealership the "On The Move" one?
