Some Sony 310BTX feedback
The unit has lots of options for sources and set up. The 3 4volt RCA's provide a clear signal for your amps. The media tray is a nice feature but has it's short comings. Phones bigger than an ipod/itouch do not fit in the tray. Also when you remove the faceplate you can easily see the player that you left inside and there is no lock for the media tray to keep someone from stealing your media player. Small issue as it does not take much effort to take the media player out and put it in your locked saddlebag along with the faceplate.
My one major complaint is that the faceplate seems to be one of the toughest to install after you remove it. At night and very little light it is near impossible to get back on as the small tabs have to insert precisely into a small dimple on the right side and then the left. Now I will say that it could be just me and maybe others can confirm or argue against my comment.

I didn't use a phone. I stuck to the flash drive side of the house. This media source also played louder than my phone and my iPod.

The biketronics splash guard was my solution to the exposed inards of the radio. Put the flash drive in my pocket and that was it.

You get used to it. Don't try to put it on in the lowered position. Push that lever on the right back into the up position and put it back on like the old school detachable face radios.
I've heard of issues with every unit out there so I don't believe HU issues are exclusive to one brand. Just like everything else there is always going to be defective units that don't perform as they should due to human error during the production process. All a company can do is try to minimize the defects getting to the customer. Coming from an engineering and manufacturing background personally, it's a very difficult thing to do. No matter how good your quality control department. The defects will always find their way to the customer.
Overall the Sony DSX-S310BTX is a great unit! Sony has since stopped manufacturing this unit but Sonic has several in stock @ $109.99 which is an excellent price for all the features this unit has. Two years ago this unit was $279 bucks. Take a look a the Sony Marine MEX-M70BT as well.
