Helped a friend with his stereo. It would cut out on him. I found a lot of frayed and loose wires. Fixed all that. Than we tried to listen to the stereo. Nothing. Light came on the amp. Volume bar moved on the display but nothing. No sound. He was about the leave. He was kinda mad. We put the bike back together. He took off got about a block away and it kicked in. He has a 45 min. ride home . He called and said it worked great all the home. He also played with it and no issues. Could something like this be caused by the Battery, regulator or some part of the charging system? Thanks
A few more details will be helpful.
What year model bike?
What HU and amp?
A good fully changed battery is a must. Was the battery on a batter tender?
Battery was not on a tender at this time, but is normally. We turned it on and off for testing so it may have been drained a bit. Bike is 2012 Electra Glide Ultra Limited. Stock battery original. HU is stock. Amp is RZ-2000D. Front speakers are 6.5 BT477. Rear are Kickers 6.75 inch in the pods. Thanks
Mine did the same thing a while back, when I looked at my voltage it was low. I rode it for about ten minutes and the voltage came up and the cutting out quit. Haven't had a problem since

Good chance it was or is the battery. Considering it's age I would be looking for a new battery. This is the exact same battery HD used for years, $110 to the door.
Thanks. Will do. I have an after market battery now. But the stock battery on my 2011 EGUL. So so slow and hard starts. But the stereo worked fine. So that was not the first place I thought of. But have read that it could cause issues. Thanks again.

Yeah, amps put an added load on the system and some amps will go into protect mode faster than others. On the RZ-2000D the green LED will turn red if it goes into protect mode.
Your 2011 EGUL is trying to tell you something. The battery is the first place to start. Have the battery load tested. A bad compensator can also cause hard starting.
Well. Replaced battery. Checked out charging system. That is all good. Spent some time with him yesterday and we rewired the bike. All speaker wires, power wires and ground. Redid the amp connections. Something? As we were putting the bike back together. I noticed the the headlight leans into the plug on the back of the stereo. I am thinking that it is pressing on the connector. Causing intermittent operation. I am going to get my pin extractor from work and replace them with new pins and see what happens. Protection light on the amp does not come on. There just is no sound. Volume bar moves. No sound until faring is on and than it is on and off. Thanks for the feedback.
If the protection light is on, there is a short. The amp is in protection mode. Unplug the speaker wires one speaker at a time until you see the protection light go out - that's your offender. Happy tracing. Also note - it is possible that it's not the wiring for the offending speaker, but the speaker itself... They can fail and short.

Thanks. FYI. The protection light is NOT on. The green light is bright and glowing. Ohms on speakers across coil are spot on. It is as if the amp has nothing to pass on to the speakers.
