and anybody else who might be able to weigh in here. I'm the guy with the nice JL Audio setup, and a JL Audio amp in the tourpak. My right side started cutting out a few weeks ago, and I could just faintly here anything from the right side when I put my ear to the speakers. Then, one day, they worked fine again for a few hours. To make a long story short, I ended up going back to the installer, and he fiddled around with things, and found the problem back by the amp. Everything's good now, except for 1 other little issue that I've been having for 6 months or so now.
I've had a Sony DSX-S100 head unit for about 2 years now. Got it mainly for the tune tray. (I'm all Ipod.) I listen to my tunes LOUD. Once in awhile (not every song), the quality fades a little, and it sounds exactly like pushing the Loudness button on your stereo at home. Nice clear highs, and then you push the Loudness button, and the highs aren't as good quality anymore. The installer couldn't figure out why, and wondered if I just need a new head unit. The Sony I have was $79, and quality has been great. For $79, and to get a tune tray, I'll probably get another one. Does this issue sound like it could be a head unit thing?
By the way, I don't have a Loudness option on the bike right now. The installer recommended against having it. He said Loudness is for "showing" and not for "going."
I would try installing an MP3 gain converter and set them all to 93 and see if you still have the problem. This should fix the problem as I had a similar issue with songs even from iTunes. I still have the problem on a couple of songs but not very many and think it's just how they are recorded.
If what your describing is happening during a song that's already playing then yes it could be HU problem. If it's just on random songs then I think Yank hit the nail on the head. Personally I would ditch the iPod. It's the weak link in your setup. If you take all of your music from iTunes and run them through MP3 gains set at 93 and then download that to a flash drive I think you'll see a noticeable difference in your music. On my Sony310 I keep the flash drive plugged in inside the tune tray and use the front USB for playing music from my phone.

Yes, it happens on a song that's already playing, but not on every song. I forgot to mention that if I turn the volume all the way back to 0, and then crank it up again, everything's fine. It might do it again before the song ends though. I'm leaning toward a new head unit. The installer told me the same thing about the Ipod! He said that's why you can't find much anymore with a tune tray. It's pretty "last week." Guess I'll have to change my ways, but might have to have some instruction on how to keep up with the times! Thanks.
Thanks for bringing that issue up and thanks Bates for including a link to fix that crap.. I've always wondered why 1 Pantera album files plays too damn loud and I have to turn it down then when Ted nugent comes on I have to turn I back up.. This fixes a huge issue I've always had
