Okay, I know this has been beat to death. That said, I spent the entire day yesterday looking on line at options to upgrade my 2012 FLHTCU to a new amped setup. I like the Biketronics retro install kit for new head units, and I've settled on the amp......SoundStream PN4.520D. As for speakers, looking at going Hertz HCX 165's for fairing. Now, I installed the Tour Pak removal kit, and I ride without it 80% of the time. Any need to upgrade tour pak speakers? If I leave them, can they handle the amp when 2 up? Or, leave the rear speakers disconnected and install lower subs as rears to compliment the Hertz? As for the head unit......no idea, and tons of options. Obviously I'm on a budget, and am trying to get the most bang for my buck. Who's gone the lower sub route? Any head unit suggestions? I know I know......are the audio threads ever going to die? I think not........
i tried to use 6.5 subs in the lower fairing, sounded ok till u started to move the sound washed out almost immediately. the enclosures have to be right for the subs to work i was using the cvo lowers can't coment on the aftsermarkets. my advise throw all the power u can at the fairing speakers.and if u are really motivated try and enclose and port the faring speakers to try and get the bass.
my own meager experience directs me to infinity kappas for under $100, add $15 for rings.
these work very well in the fairing, they make better use of the power- more sound per watt and have good even tonality.
I have the tweeters attenuated and generally run +1 on the bass and treble. the inside of the fairing shell has some teatment
easy compatibility with stock radio is the rockford PBR300x2 ( 150 x 2) or x4 ( 75 x 4) at 2Ω.
costing $136.50 on amazon
this will connect directly t you speaker outs from the headunit and will turn on/off with the radio, no remote or switching needed

Now that this thread is here, did you already but the SS amp? What kind of budget are you lookin at? And are you wanting loud and clear at 80 or warmer and loud while cruising the back roads?

Two things Pete. You don't want subs and the SS 520.D will not sufficiently push the Hertz HCX 165 speakers. since you ride with your tour pack off the majority of the time. what you want to focus on are your fairing speakers and lowers. In the lowers you need LOUD due to them being so far away from your ears. Ideally mid range speakers should go in the lowers and components or coaxial's in the fairing. NO SUBS!!
I have not made any purchases yet. My head still hurts from looking all day yesterday. I'm really considering the biketronics retro kit and a new head unit. I just dread having to swap it if/when I ever sell. I say that cause I built up a 96" RK, only to sell it a couple of years after. My wife still jabs at me over that. I don't get mentally attached to "things". However, my HD is very near/dear to my heart.
Matt, I have the $$ to do a nice setup. But I don't want to spend a fortune. Trying to stay in the 1k to 1.5k range total. That's head unit/speakers/hardware/amp. Am I dreaming here?

You have come to the right place. That budget should be plenty sufficient and get you an awesome setup. These guys will definitely get you where you want to be.
Next, where do you want all the speakers to be and will you add on in the future?
