Lots of more experienced guys here to help, but in my experience...
If you mount them outside the pods they will rub at the edges until they self destruct. Inside the pods you have some dremeling to do on the support ribs of the pods. Easy job.
They do sound good once in.

The speaker grill is the major problem in your situation. Changing the stock ones to the H-D Boom or other aftermarket grill(s) will move the parts that would/could contact the speaker away from them.
You can also modify your speaker pods, as shown in the video, and it is free. Also, removing the lip of the pods where the speaker mounts can also allow the speaker to be moved further away from the inner fairing. This is also a free option.
Choosing a speaker that has a flat, thinner basket mounting ring, and a tweeter that does not protrude from the face of the speaker makes it so much easier, in general, to mount the speakers onto the face of the pods. Which is the easiest way to go.
Thanks for the input. Mounted the Kappas inside the mount, just had to cut off the standoffs then the speakers fit inside the pods. Didn't have time to tune the amp, will do that tomorrow, already sounds much clearer than stock.
