I just got 17 Street Glide Special back after having Fosgate pbr280x4 installed and JL C1 components and it sounds worse then boom stock. I took it Harley before install and they said there is no flash or flatline unless you add 2 more speakers. Is there something I need to do electronically at the dealership, was it a bad combination of equipment? If there is something at the dealership is there anyone who knows exactly what they do to flash it? I was standing there while he hooked up to the bike it have no clue what to tell him.
If that's not enough I also lost my tuner function and they triggered a check engine light. I'm scheduled for my 1000 maintenance Sunday and would love to have it fixed while I'm there if I can.

First things first. Can you verify what amp you have? No such thing as a PBR280X4??
I'm thinking you mean the PBR300X4 but we need to verify. Not gonna beat on you about taking it to Harley Davidson. They have already beat on you enough!! Lol! 1st Rule of audio on the forum is Don't listen to anything the dealer has to say about audio. They have no clue. We can help you as long as you promise to stay away from the dealer!!
And I'll go ahead and say that if you chose to go with the 300x4 then yes terrible decision. But, like Gann says, we can help. Did you use some sort of line leveler or hi level input for the amp? Few more details please.

I am a finance manager at an auto dealership and used a installer that we use for aftermarket who told me he had experience with motorcycles. If I had to guess there was no line leveler used. The amp is a pbr300x4. It was originally supposed to be the JL 280 but the shipping was delayed because of the storm and i was told they were similar quality.
I have no problem spending some more money to get it corrected and I don't think he will have a problem fixing it I just need to tell him exactly what needs to be done. His installer obviously doesn't have the experience that I was told he had. I would assume he wired the amp and speakers and put it back together and thought that's what you do.
That is some pretty crappy gear for a motorcycle. Car guys normally aren't up to speed on the all the details needed for bikes. The JL amp is FAR superior but it's not just the storm they are on back order until the end of the month. The C1 JL's are also the most entry level speaker JL has and can not get loud enough to be heard on the road.
The issue you are having is that the stock rushmore Headunit comes pre-programmed from Harley and has a very awkward signal that when amplified it sounds VERY bad. Harley can ONLY re-program the unit when you plug in a HD Boom audio packages. This leaves you with just a few options the easiest being a biketroncs line leveler (to help "level" the signal), or use a digital signal processer, or find an aftermarket shop with access to the software to "flash" the signal flat (there aren't many of these around).
My recommendation:
BT Line leveler
Better amp
Better speakers

This is the bike of my dreams and music is critical so if I have to redo it I will. Lastly is the Jl strong enough for rears when I add later.
Even better while installing the check engine light came on is that normal? It's going on this weekend to Harley for stage 1 so I'm assuming they can clear it?

The Rockford PBR300X4 was the worst possible amp you could have put in your dream bike. No comparison to the JL amps! Since you have already asked Alex for help I will defer to him on suggestions. But I'm 100% sure of what he will suggest. We're pretty much on the same page everyday. Whatever path you choose the X4 has to go! and no it's not normal for the check engine light to come on during install.

The JL amp will NOT be enough for more speakers down the road. You really want about 100-150watts per speaker on a bike. When you say the rear you mean 6x9 Lids?
If it were me I'd go with the Arc Audio 600.4, it's meant for bikes and has incredible sound quality. In the fairing I'd do AD Design CX62 and in the lids a set of DD VO 6X9, another options guys are liking is the new Polk Audio M line. I have a set of the 6.5's at the shop to try out but Hurricane Irma has slowed us down a bit. If I like them, we'll carry those as well. I'm a huge JL audio fan boy, but for your set up I wouldn't run them.
Well ... Maybe just add the line levelers/signal processors and give a listen with what you have? "Maybe" you'll like what you hear as is.. For now
Good thought and in some cases, a maybe, but trust me. That amp simply wont do it in a motorcycle. I have done everything possible with the help of some of the best around trying to get that thing to make some volume and never had a favorable outcome. Maybe a little better than the stock HK HU? But not even an upgrade now days...
