I guess I don't understand the opposition of running the ground back to the battery or ground lug in front of the battery. If you're pulling the tank to run the positive wire there anyway, what's 1 more wire? It's just as easy to route 2 as it is to route 1 of them. Again, the path of the least resistance.

As other users have stated, you've gotta run a wire to the positive side of the battery, it ain't any more real trouble to run another wire to the negative side. You've gotta remember these amps draw a tremendous amount of current. Any weak links in either the positive wire or the ground wire could cause trouble.
